mosquitoWe have had a lot of rain this Spring which means .... mosquitoes will be rampant this year.

Did you know that the female mosquito is the one that bites. They are attracted to the carbon dioxide, warmth, moisture and body odor emitted by humans or animals. The female mosquito bites because she needs blood in order to lay eggs. Mosquito bites are itchy and uncomfortable. They may also carry the West Nile Virus.

Lets protect ourselves, our children and pets from these pesky mosquitoes.  There are many mosquito repellents on the market.  To help rid or keep the mosquitoes away try some of these helpful tips:

Short term effects:
Use Lemon Fresh Joy dish detergent - Put some water in a white dinner plate and add a couple drops of Lemon Fresh Joy dish detergent.  Set the dish on your porch, patio, or other outdoor area.

Listerine - Using a spray bottle, add Listerine.  Spray yourself, your deck and your yard.  Use the spray inside a dog house or on the dog's bedding.  Mosquitoes should be repelled for a few days.

The two above products may help temporarily, but try this all natural spray....  Mosquito Barrier.   It is a very strong liquid garlic made from very potent garlic cloves.  Just one spraying of all natural, liquid garlic-based Mosquito Barrier will keep mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, gnats, fire ants out of your yard and away from your home, 24 hours a day for nearly a month.

If you know of other products that would help keep mosquitoes away, please add in the comments.

Hi Rebecca - We bought a Mosquito Magnet several years ago, and it works like a charm. It uses a heated plate to convert propane to CO2, which attracts the mosquitos, and then a fan sucks them into a trap. It's quiet, reasonably economical - a 5 gallon tank last about 3 weeks - and it covers an area of about 1/2 acre.

Howdy and evening Rebecca

Rebecca my friend, folks sure do need to be mighty careful because of the Mosquitoes. They have already gotten bad in my area. Between not having a real Winter here, and that most of the Small Towns have taken Mosquitoes control out their budgets, the major Mosquitoes problem is only going to get worst.

You sure have gave folks mighty fine tips to use.

Have a good one

Rebecca - I had never heard of using Listerine before. I hate those oil-based repellents so this sounds better to me.

Rebecca, thanks for the advice.  I thought that garlic solution might also keeps the neighbors, friends and family out of your yard for a month.  So, there's a double plus in using that one.  8-) jk

Great ideas. I hate, hate, hate bug spray almost as much as the mosquitos. I use citronella candles, but that doesn't work so well when it's windy so I can't wait to try these. Thanks!

HI Rebecca, just use me as your magnet, they follow me everywhere! I could remove all of them. I get so chewed up by them and they know I hate them fiercely. :)

Rebecca:

I am one of those mosquito magnets.  When I step out in our backyard at dusk, I can hear them dive bombing me.  I am definitely going to try the detergent and Listerine repellents.  Hope they work.

Rebecca --- thanks for the great help in avoiding these pesky things.  May need to get some of that long lasting stuff -- I know the wife won't mind, as she loves to cook with garlic.

Thank you for the tip on the garlic Mosquito Barrier. Mosquitos do not love Santa Fe as much as I do due to our climate zone, but the ants do! I'm always amazed at what I learn here everyday. Thank you!
