Since we as realtors are self employed, what do realtors do for health insurance?  Does NAR have a group style plan for us?  I have poor health insurance right now and need to make sure that I am covered when I need it.

Tell us what companies that you recommend.

Has anyone had any luck with internet type quotes?

Presently I am with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Florida under a POP program.  The monthly rate keeps going up with age, but I quess that is to be expected with any insurance company.  Have used BC/BS for years and have been satisfied.

Well, quite simply my husband and I pay up the nose for them.  We both have pre-existing health stuff that prevents us from simply purchasing coverage.  My husband is a contractor, and we have a group health policy through his corporation...we are young (I am 29 and my husband is 34) and we pay around $700/mo.

I to have heard of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield for the self employed. I am fortunate to have a husband that carries my insurance. I also know that my Real estate association has discounts with different companies. You can check there.

Jerry and I are presently on the hunt ourselves.  We have BC/BS and each and EVERY year the rates go up, or we up the deductible so we can continue to (barely) afford it.

Don't get me started!  It's a rip-off.

We are looking into HSA's (Health Savings Account) to see if that could get our premiums lowered.  Right now we're both in good health and could conceivably save hundred each year.  You might want to check into that.

Good luck!

Jeff, I have an individual plan that I am not happy with so I am looking to find the same answer.

You can call your auto/home provider and see if they offer any discount for having multiple policies with one provider-if you do a health saving account annually you can choose higher deductables which lower the monthly premiums - do a websearch online for complaints about the carrier BEFORE you sign the dotted line !

Sincerely,

Grace Safrin

Some Realtors have individual insurance, some their spouse's insurance, some work two jobs and use the other job's insurance, and sadly for some (47 million Americans) they have NO insurance.

Some individual carriers are BCBS, Unicare, Golden Rule.

I have a group plan which has worked very well and is an HSA. It is with Golden Rule - a United Healthcare company.

Jeff,

Realtor.org under benefits.  You will find a few companies that offer a discount.

Here is a link

Hope this helps,

The subject of Health insurance is nothing but bad news.  I think all of us need medical attention when we hear what they want to charge us and at the same time the CEOs of these companies are making tens of millions $.  It truly is one of the disgraceful things going on in this country today.

Jeff.. Great topic as my wife and sone are covered by BC/BS and I have none. BC/BS denied me due to pre-existing conditions. I have VA disability which cover the pre-existing. Would love to find a good family program as well. I will look into the link posted by Holly and keep an eye as to other comments on this post.

Hi Jeff,

This is definitely a problem since 30% of realtors have no insurance according to the National Association of Realtors. One good option is a medical and dental discount program that I'm promoting. It's a comprehensive program that offers savings for the entire household for a small monthly fee. Please go to www.yesbenefits.com for more information or feel free to email me at tahabenefits@aol.com.
