Hula Dancers, Food, Shows, Ent ertainment!

For all you folks who are coming for the Hawaii Chapter: CRS Sellabration at the Hilton Hawaiian Village from January 28-30, 2008 I have been working on this Guide to Oahu that Sharon Simms  (Who is not only attending the CRS Sellabration but having a CLHMS class on January 24 and 25 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village too!) suggested that I put together an "ActiveRain Guide to Oahu) for all the attendees who want to do extra curricular activities on the side too.

There is way too much information to put in one post so I have done a three part series and I hope all of you attending (even for those of you who just may want info for that later vacation) will find the information beneficial:

ActiveRain Guide to Oahu: Points of Interest (Part I)  The following Guides for Oahu, Hawaii should prove helpful for activities, scenic areas, dining and points of interest for the visitor. In Part I

ActiveRain Guide to Oahu: Points of Interest (Part II)  covers the sightseeing part of Oahu which will definitely be the "in thing" to do for the avid nature, scenery and picture taking lover! I chose the sightseeing trip to go around the North Shore just for the fact that most of you have heard about the famous surfing spots on the North Shore and around the time you are coming there will be winter waves breaking on the north side of our island.

                                                                                                  Part III:

Everyone knows about our tourist industry and Waikiki is famous for picture perfect postcards with Diamond Head in the background. (In the show below the first picture of the sailing has Diamond Head in the background) Waikiki Beach, the Honolulu Zoo, the Waikiki Aquarium and Diamond Head Crater are all around the same vicinity and The Bus (click for info) system here is great to travel around from site to site.

Some Points of Entertainment:

  • The Star of Honolulu has many different DINNER SHOW PACKAGES to pick from. So, remember, you don't have to be a tourist to go out and enjoy the finer things while in Hawaii!
  • Hawaii's Whale Watching Tours (In spiritual Hawaiian custom the Whales are the essense of the ocean) and Swim with the Dolphins (Sea Life Park)
  • Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park!  Now this is a place to go for the whole family.  (provided you love to get wet!) 25 acres of speed and shotgun slides, the Cliffhanger, Water playground, Keiki (children's) cove, picnics, and more!  Just make reservations and they will do all the planning and coordinating for you!  All you have to do is show up and have fun! There are also volleyball courts, lawn games, dunk tank, horse shoe pits, private pavilions for you and your family. Weddings? No problem!
  • Aloha Stadium Swap Meet and the Pearlridge Kam Swap Meet are great places for outdoor shopping for souvenirs, clothing, polynesian style crafts and much more. Way cheaper than buying in Waikiki that's for sure! Open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Food?  Check out the food sites here!

  • RESTAURANT'S CYBERGUIDE is a full on guide of all restaurants on all islands in Hawaii that were recognized and most of them received awards.  So, with all the information I have given you all week you can add this one to it.  You can add this article to your list for planning your trip (or relocating) to Hawaii along with the foods you're going to try as soon as you get here!
  • LOCAL KINE RECIPES has an abundance of receipes you may want to try before you even get here!

A Couple of MY Favorites:

  • Zippy's Restaurants    24 Locations around Oahu. A variety of food to choose from and reasonably priced.

Sally, I love all your local posts.  Thank you so much for doing all this research to educate us about your part of the world.  I suspect that it will really help you in attracting buyers, and hopefully sellers will see that.

You are the true Oahu expert Sally.  WOW.  I would love to bring the kids to Oahu sometime soon.  My husband is a kite surfer, and wants to try it out on Oahu.  I wish we were coming for the CRS Sellabration!

Sally, If I were able to come I would probably be far to facinated in some of your wonderful things to do that I might miss the conference :)  I would definitely have to spend some time there, I wouldn't want to miss most of these things you've shared.  I'm sure everyone is going to have a fantastic time!

Hi Sally,

Oh my, you've really put a lot of work into this one and the others, Sally thank you so much.

Marlene and I were planning on the Aloha Stadium swap meet, we've both been there before, yet we weren't aware of Pearlridge. Which of those two would be your first choice?

We're also planning on heading to the crater this first a.m. to hike Diamond Head before it gets to hot, then head to the Punchbowl for a visit. Your food choices sound great, we're hoping to have a few plate lunches.

Hey Woo Hoo!!  Wonderful job on this post, and you truly are the expert for your area.  I've been there a couple of times, and have seen a number of the places you've mentioned.  The one place I didn't get to that I really wanted to get to was the stadium for the swap meet.  Next time, I'm going there, and it sounds like to Pearlridge, too.

I missed your first 2 parts, so will go check them out.  I'm almost afraid to ask what that black stuff was in the 'typical Hawaiian meal' in your show.....what is that?

Some day we'll be back to your beautiful island, and when we do, the first thing I'll be wanting to do is to meet you!  And Randy, too.

Lynda:  I would go to the Aloha Stadium for souvenirs and stuff. The Kam one is about 10 minutes down the road but it's smaller and has more local stuff too. You'd mentioned before that you'd hiked in Diamond Head....have fun and drink a lot of water!  It's a little cooler now but in there it'll still be hot! Today is beautiful with not a cloud in the sky looking out my back right now.

WOW, Woo Hoo, is all I can say. What a series! I'd thought of taking Tami over to the Big Island on our free weekend between the class and Sellabration but from reading all this and various links, there's far too much to do and see right on Oahu. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for all the time you spent compiling this. I do think you should put it together in an e-book!

Sally- Great job on the series....and Suzanne will be surprised at how much there is to see and do, even if it's not on the list.....and as for Restaurants....there is a seafood place that had the most fantastic early bird special on the meal......I was shocked at how good the food was, and the atmosphere, etc. and the price was so reasonable.....the Restaurant is in Waikiki, on the main Blvd, upstairs......that's all I remember :)
