Last week, Wayne took a trip to Arizona. He toured the Grand Canyon, The Verde Canyon, Sedona, Meteor Crater, the Petrified Forest, and Canyon deChelly. While in Canyon deChelly, he took this video of the annular eclipse.
Annular eclipses are caused when the Moon passes in front of the Sun but doesn't appear as large as the Sun due to its elliptical orbit around the Earth. In a total solar eclipse, the time when the Moon completely blocks the Sun is called Totality. In an annular eclipse, the time when the most Sun is blocked is called an Annularity.
Canyon deChelly is a national Monument and is part of the National Parks Service. The local residents are mostly Navajos and have certain traditions associated with any eclipse. The Navajo believe that the sun dies during a solar eclipse and are instructed to stay indoors and keep quiet during the duration of darkness. They are not permitted to look at the Sun or Moon during the eclipse and may not eat, drink, sleep, work, weave, or perform any other activity lest they have stomach problems or other health issues and bring misfortune to their family.
Please enjoy Wayne's video.
