I love my little town. I was born and raised here, yes I am cultered and have lived in other places like Greenwich, CT, Tarrytown, NY, White Plains, NY , Stamford CT, and New York City. I returned to Hyde Park because it has so much to offer.
First it is home to one of the most loved Presidents, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. I have never meet a person who did not admire this man. His home and Presidential library are here. A great place to visit. During the Spring they have a WWII exhibit, the kids love it, Tanks, gear and all. For more information go to: http://www.nps.gov/hofr Plenty of hiking trails abound!
Secondly, the Vanderbilt Mansion and historic site http://www.nps.gov/vamaw which is about 3 miles from the
Roosevelt Home. This is a photo of the interior of the mansion that overlooks the mighty Hudson River during the Christmas season. It is stunningly decorated. The grounds have great trails and there is a small picnic area on the banks of the Hudson!
Third, the Mills Mansion and Historic Site, now renamed Staatsburgh. http://www.staatsburgh.org/. This place is truely a little treasure. It receives little traffic as the previous two parks, is just as grand and also sits on the banks of the Hudson River. Don't be surprised if you see Uma Thurman strolling the grounds, she owns the adjacent estate formerly the Penthouse mansion. Last year while taking a stroll my wife and I passed Rutger Hauer . He said hello as we passed.
I do not want to forget the home of Eleanor Roosevelt www.nps.gov/elro, I mean one of America's most influential women. My mother sat on her lap and was read stories as a young child. A moment my mother will cherish for her life. I lived in a neighborhood that bordered this great ladies estate. My backyard was over 1000 acres of forever wild land. No lot premium for that either.
Finally my favorite reason, the beautiful Hudson River. http://www.hudsonriver.org/ This is one mighty river and a great resource that has been fairly well cleaned and is having a rebirth. I am an avid Striped Bass fisherman and each spring those bass make there way up the Hudson to spawn. The fish enter the river at the NYC harbor and continue north until they hit the Federal Dam at Troy. The journey is over 100 miles. Last year I hooked into my best fish ever a 20 pound fish. Where am I during the spring run, not selling homes that's for sure. If you enjoy fishing the Striped Bass run in the Hudson is one of the best. Last year a new record fish was caught weighing 56 pounds! I also use the river for water sking and pleasure boating. Access to the river in Hyde Park can be gained at any one of the mansions, but for boaters the only public launch is the Norrie State Park Marina. Only $6.00 to drop your boat no matter the size! http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/info.asp?parkID=134 I have my boat slipped here any all are welcome during the spring run. Norrie also offers camping and a riverfront park and hiking trails that span the river front from cliffs about 25ft above the river.
Do not be shocked if you see a Bald Eagle while hiking or fishing along the banks or while on a boat. The eagles god bless them have made a huge comback. Daily sitings are not uncommon!
