Thank goodness our local newspapers haven't stopped printing news tidbits from the past.
Today's Bonner County Daily Bee brought a tale of escape from the County Jail - 100 years ago.
It seems that 3 prisoners waited until the sheriff and the turnkey had gone home for dinner, then went out through the attic. At the time the news was printed, the escapees had not been found.
Why were these 3 men in jail?
- One was serving 125 days for bootlegging.
- One was serving 90 days for larceny.
- One was serving 30 days for giving whisky to an Indian.
Hmmm....
The 50 years ago news told of the "we can do it" spirit of America -
The Sagle Helping Hands club decided to build a community hall. One resident donated the land, many got together to build a fence around the area, and members of the organization pledged $25 each.
Their next step was to seek donations of money, materials, and labor from the community.
Can you imagine any building project today being launched with pledges of $25?
