Roald MarthThat’s what it felt like one day in December. The MRIS sponsored a seminar with Roald Marth that turned out to be a great follow-up to our Smartphone session with Dick Betts. Listening to Roald you have to be quick and attentive because the ideas and information come at you fast.

So much good information, so much to remember. There’s no way I can recapture it all, but here are some of the highlights from this self-described nerd. (What else could you call someone who had almost perfect SAT scores, and the two questions he missed, well, he says the test was wrong!)

For those of us who are constantly connected it may be hard to believe, but Roald says that most real estate agents are way behind when it comes to using technology. Many of us are what Marth calls “digital immigrants” – technology is a new world to us – whereas our kids are the “natives” having grown up with computers. Guess which group speaks the language more fluently?

Roald had lots of recommendations and comments – here are some of the notes I made:

  • Dell XPSDon’t buy computers in December – changes and updates are made at the end of the year. Wait to buy until after February.
  • Don’t put Windows Vista on an old machine – it needs gigabytes of space just to run, and many of your existing programs won’t work with it.
  • He likes the Dell XPS 1330 notebook which has a camera and the use of Skype.
  • Another favorite is the Okidata 5500 C5590 Laser Printer for under $400.
  • Roald recommends the Canon 870 wide-angle digital camera for less than $300.
  • The Nuvi 350 GPS for about $279 has maps for the entire US and Canada
  • The Mac is a great machine, but tough to use in real estate.
  • CyberStars LogoThe Fujitsu ScanSnap is a great little scanner (many of my fellow CyberStars agree).
  • For a social networking site, he says FaceBook for the younger folks and LinkedIn for the rest of us.
  • Google yourself at least once a month.
  • Buy your own domain name, your children’s domain names, even your pet’s domain name. (Yes, his dog has his own site!)
  • TreoBuy your name on Google AdWords, and buy your listing address. People with Smartphones are Googling the addresses of properties as they drive by.

It was another good technology session, an opportunity for learning, sharing and networking, some of the things I like best about being in this business. Pat Hommel, who I met through AR, was there, along with Terry Stafford from the All About Real Estate radio show.

If you ever have a chance to hear Roald Marth, take it. He is truly the Technology Evangelist – he wants to see information available everywhere up to and including on the moon. But what else would you expect from a man whose license plate is NETNUTS?

Margaret, these are great tips! I've never heard of Roald before, but I'm off to check him out! I hope you and Lee had a wonderful Christmas and will have a great 2008!

"Buy your name on Google AdWords, and buy your listing address. People with Smartphones are Googling the addresses of properties as they drive by."

How do you do that?  Is it like purchasing a side ad when someone Googles the key words?

Margaret thanks I've heard about the fitjisu scanner before. I never thought about buying my kids domains except for my daughter who is in real estate.

Margaret - I have Mac. It's been great in all aspects, but one -contact management systems. Otherwise, it's the absolute best thing for me. I have Parallels on it for the MLS systems that don't support Mac. After using Mac, it's hard to be on the Windows interface. My 2c.

Thanks for the post!  I have macs also.  I love that I can easily have my laptop networked to my office desktop, so if I need to work on a file in my basement, I don't have to climb to the second floor where my office is located!  I have a PC on my desk for emergencies, but even that will be unnecessary with the new MAC OS.

I agree with the MAC observation.  I also like his tip about the time of the year to buy a computer.

Jeff, You are so welcome. Wishing you a wonderful New Year.

Linda, Thanks for stopping by. Happy New Year to you.

Sherry, Buy address on godaddy.com

Missy, Good idea to buy kids and grandkids domains...not so sure about the pets.

Gregory,Sounds like you are definitely a Mac person.

Randy, He had a lot of good tips.

Gail, So what computer did you buy in December?

01/06/2008 09:57 PM by Margaret Rome- Baltimore, Md.-HomeRome.com (TREC-Sell Your Home With Margaret Rome)

Margaret, Well, it was last December and while I longed for a sexy Sony Vaio, I decided to continue to buy Dell.  I bought a Dell Inspiron E1405 with Vista and the Microsoft Professional Office Suite.  It took a while to get everything working together, primarily because of Vista, but other than needing a battery replacement about a month ago, it has been fine.

Joeann, You always say the best things and that is just one of the reasons that I adore and admire you. Just took the ACRE exam tonight!

It is a mutual admiration society (but I know you know that!)  A big congratulations on the ACRE Designation!!! Lots of really good sharing and information in that community! And, we all have to be thinking about what the consumers are going to be best served by. What I love is that the way the ACRE looks at it- consulting ISN'T Discounting...but this is probably a whole 'nother post! YOU GO GIRL!

I went to a smartphone lecture in Vegas and it's definitely a popular trend. It opens up a lot of opportunities to reach buyers while they're driving/walking by your yard sign. Do you have your web address on your yard signs? Anyone experimenting with sending property info via text message yet?

Thank you for a very informative and insightful post!

Joeanne, I need some time to spend on the on the ACRE site. I do like Mollie's  consuting concept.

Carson, yes I have www.HomeRome.com as a sign rider.

Jim, You are welcome and thanks for stopping by.

Margaret - if buyers are googling the address as they drive by, what domain name is best - the property address all run together? with hyphens in between the words?

04/20/2008 04:23 PM by Sharon Simms St Pete Florida CRS CIPS CLHMS (RE/MAX Metro)

Sharon, I have sent your question to Roald.

When googling the address, just type in the number and street. Works for me.
