Honor our men and women

Many honor different customs on Memorial Day.  It’s always warmed my heart to see seas of people wearing red poppies over Memorial weekend honoring our service men and women.

In 1915, Moina Michael was inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields” and replied with her own poem:

We cherish too, the Poppy red

That grows on fields where valor led,

It seems to signal to the skies

That blood of heroes never dies.

She wanted to do something special and came up with the idea of wearing red poppies on Memorial Day in honor of those who died serving the nation during war.  She was the first to wear one and sold poppies to her friends and co-workers donating the money to benefit servicemen in need.

Let’s keep that tradition alive...purchase and wear a red poppy for Memorial Day!!

Yes, buy and wear the red poppy.  Then, go further.  Get involved in honoring our vets by fully informing ourselves not only about these endless wars, but the kind of treatment our vets are getting both physically if injured or by employers not honoring their committments to our returning vets.  Insist that they do.

Dorie, I remember as a teenager I was assigned to pick my dad up at the train station.  I always remember seeing those red poppies on each person that passed by.  Thanks for jogging my memory.

Dear Dorie,

What a wonderful post. Thank you so much!

Moina Michael and I have a special connection. In 1942, my Dad was a young soldier about to go overseas when he met his “Poppy Lady.” As Moina helped soldiers during WWI, she helped my Dad by sitting with him and chatting, trying to ease his fears and worries. Dad turned 98 in July and still remembers Moina’s kindness.

I worked with Moina's great-nieces and experts on a book for children in the hopes of reviving the tradition of the poppy. I'd love to share two videos with you. One is an interview of Dad and me by the producer of Georgia Public Broadcast. The other is a trailer for my book, The Poppy Lady: Moina Belle Michael and Her Tribute to Veterans, which becomes available September 1, 2012. My portion of the book’s proceeds will support the National Military Family Association’s Operation Purple®, which benefits children of the U.S. military.

I hope everyone will remember to wear a poppy on Memorial Day and Veterans Day and to remember the sacrifice of our troops~always!

Again, thank you!

Barbara
