Hi Jeremy!

I hear ya with all those styles.

We also have terms that not all areas recognize like 'PDX-Style' houses that are basically four square, and sometimes bungalow houses (as if that design was created in Portland)...  'dayranch': ranch with a daylight basement, 'ranchalow': those fifties one story houses that fuse ranch and bungalow, some have basements and a term that runs around the office 'ranch-burger': a term to indicate any average house in an average neighborhood... often used in sentences such as 'I've had enough of these difficult appraisals this week, I sure would like a couple of ranch-burgers' -

Believe me, we do have our share of 'crap' houses as well, although I don't think the underwriters would find humor in appraisers entering 'crap' under style (I mean, how do you adjust for that?) - Besides, I suppose it would show some sort of bias (?) -

Hi Sara,
Must admit I missed a few of those.  Guess I needed this lesson, thanks.

Nice! I bookmarked this and will refer to it when I'm in doubt. Or I just just call :) I recognize several of these. My colleague sold number 14 over on Stark several years back and it's a fantastic house!! Better call me if you want to have a rum date!!

Hi Cynthia - Yes, if I didn't make up the silly quiz, I would have missed a couple myself.  Italian or neoclassical anything around here is rather rare.

Hey Jennifer - These are all in Spokane, although I can imagine #14 on Stark Street... it also reminds me of one on Denver (less the Swiss tudor detailing).  Call coming soon :-)

Keep sending those orders :-)

Sara, Very good information. I love old homes. My husband is a contractor/builder and one of our most rewarding projects was restoring a 1905 Queen Anne Victorian. I enjoyed the link to the preservation website also.  Amy

Sara- Great post. Often times we find agents mis-stating a home just to get the word craftsman or bungalow into the title. (popular styles here currently) I will be sure to visit the website for more information.

Thanks for posting!

Best,

Scott

Congrats on a great post. I now know why I can't find a home... they are all in Spokane :-)  I am a big fan of Craftsmans & Bungalows but live in an area that is very traditional; capes, colonials, ranches, farmhouses and an occasional unique one thrown in.  Thank you for the lesson.

 Happy New Year!

Thanks Amy - I saw the posting of the house that you and your husband built.  What a beaut!  I am tempted to get a true old fashioned fixer, but I know I'd be over my head...

Hi Scott - Thanks for the kudos - I find a lot of newer construction that is listed as 'craftsman' or 'bungalow' and although they have some of the same features, I just don't buy it.

Sara- You are right. Many builders call their new construction Craftsman around here. Some elements of the design but for the most part they are not Craftsman at all. It is certainly a popular buzzword around here. I wish a local builder would actually take the time and effort to build a authentic Craftsman with modern features on the interior. I feel that would be a very popular move in our market.

Best wishes,

Scott

Hello Deborah - I think the last time I was in Spokane it was driving through in the middle of the night (and I was sleeping).  I do need to make a trip up there soon.  It's funny that this post really got me wanting to :-) - Thanks for dropping by.

Hey Scott - Have you heard of any new terms come out lately?  I'm tired of 'traditional' and 'ranch' (and 'skinny traditionals') to describe just about everything that has been built in the past two or three decades.

Hello Sara, My name is Thad Landis. I have been appraising single family homes in the Chicago area for the last 4 years with a certified residential appraiser. As a result, I have written hundreds of appraisals, primarily new construction appraisals, as well as REOs, refinance appraisals, appraisal reviews, and bridge loan (drive-by) appraisals. I am now in the process of obtaining my appraiser’s license. I am looking for opportunities to gain appraisal experience in and around your location. Please let me know if it would be convenient to discuss this further with you. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Thad Landis phone: 708 228 7064 email: landthad@speakeasy.net

Wow Sara, I just took your test and except for the excuse that styles are different in upstate New York, I failed miserably :-(  I better use your link and study a bit!!  I thought I would do pretty well...wrong

Hello Thad - I sent contact information.

I know, Patrice!  I was a bit off myself.  Although Spokane is hours away, there are some styles that stumped me as they're not very common in this market.

Great quiz.  I struggle with identifying styles.  Here we have a catchall of "National Folk/Farm" that seems to describe the average, added on to in odd ways over the years Wisconsin farmhouse. ;)

Hello Rod - I hope I sort of answered your questions offline.  I'm afraid I wasn't too much help other than suggesting an internet search.

Hi Brenda - Like I mentioned, some of these really stumped me, too - Funny, we don't use the term 'National Folk' here - That's a rather brilliant cover-all name for an 'add-on' house though :-)
