Last weekend was a little rainy and cold but after a day of being inside our grandson wanted to do something outside. This was a great time to explore the Mt. Margaret Trail. I’d heard it was an easy hike and although I’ve passed by it thousands of times, I’d never been on it.
The Mt. Margaret Trail is on the North side of the Red Feather Lakes Rd. (County Rd. 74E) and approximately 20 miles West of Highway 287 in between Glacier View Meadows, in Livermore and the Village of Red Feather Lakes.
We started out in the late afternoon and planned to only go for an hour or so and then turn back in order to be home in plenty of time for dinner.
Before we even reached the trailhead, our grandson had to capture a photo of this blue bird. They are such a beautiful brilliant blue and always a joyful sight.
We went through the gate, and followed the trail through a beautiful meadow. We passed a hiker before arriving at the South Lone Pine Creek crossing and he told us that there were logs to walk across the creek. Somehow, we missed them the first time. We followed the creek upstream and then back downstream until we found the place to cross so that we could continue our hike with (mostly) dry shoes. This time of year and especially after the rain, it was a little marshy in spots, though.
The trail is easy and a good part of our walk was through open meadows, there are many interesting rock formations with pine & aspen forests along the way. We saw signs of moose, but didn’t get to see one and we found walking sticks that made balancing the logs across the creek a little easier on the way back.
The Mount Margaret Trail is for hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riding, there are camping spots along the trail. On this day, we didn’t make it far enough to see the trail’s end, follow the trail to Dowdy Lake or explore the A Loop or B Loop trails-but we talked for 2 hours and not one computer, cell phone or television interrupted our special time together.
Mount Margaret Trail is a great place to be alone and relax in nature or spend memorable time with your loved ones. These times are special and easy access to places like this are what make living here uniquely wonderful.
Next time, we’ll leave earlier and take a picnic or maybe we’ll even try the Lady Moon Trail across the road!
