Another Era? Not Entirely!

By
Real Estate Agent

There is a sound from my childhood that reverberates in my memory, even to this day.  It is the sound of a train locomotive idling while passengers are boarding for destinations of their choosing.   It is the long meaty tone, wrrrooomb, which leaves the imprint from a bygone era.  While I was growing up, my dad worked at the Western Pacific Railroad, here in Sacramento.  And often we traveled by train to visit family in other places.

Although the sepia scenes below reflect warm memories of times long passed, they were actually taken recently in Old Sacramento.  It is the modern Pyramid Building and the CalSTRS (California Teachers Retirement System) highrise building stitched into the tapestry of present day, which extinguish thoughts they could have been snapped decades ago.

This year, The California State Railroad Museum is marking the 29th consecutive season of offering popular excursion train rides.  For more information on these rides, visit: “The Excursion Train Ride” webpage.

Love the days gone by look.  We had a dinner train in this era that just closed down.  I really enjoyed the ride.

Kathy - Trains always seemed present in my young years.  I live a little further from them now.  But when I'm down in Old Sacramento, and see this particular locomotive, I always think of my dad immediately!

Kristin - A private berth was a luxury we didn't have.  One of my earliest memories is when I was about 2.  My mother, sister and I went to Kansas on the train.  My bed was two suitcases on the floor between two of the couch seats that were facing each other.  The trip was 3 days and 2 nights:-)

Bruce - The roof of the old depot is heavy shake.

William - We have dinner trains over in Napa Wine Country.  They provide pleasant experiences.

Erv - I wish America would rekindle a love affair with trains.  Considering what a nightmare that flying has become, it seems like train travel would be very attractive.

Meryl, your sepia toned images certainly remind us that passenger trains are from a different time. However, freight trains seem to be on a strong roll. According to a news story I watched on one of the networks tonight, their industry hired 15,000 workers in 2011 and they expect to do the same for 2012. Their industry has had a steady workforce for decades. Now they are retiring in droves and hiring 1 in 5 veterans to fill these new positions. Maybe this will be the impetus traveling by rail needs to start up again.

Myrl these shots are spectacular.   I love trains, and if I was in Sacramento would certainly take one of these trips.

Thanks so much for sharing.

Myrl,

Outstanding shots to kick off our new group. Like the sepia tone. I remember riding these trains (Illinois Central and GM&O). :)

Great shots, Myrl!  We haven't been to the Railroad Museum in a long time.  You're right about the Sepia effect, it looks like it was taken decades ago!

Emily - We still have the freight trains rolling through an area of our city.  I live a distance from the rails, but occassionally on a warm night when the windows are open, I can hear a whistle, as they move through town.

Jennifer - If you are interested in trains, and ever come to Sacramento, be certain to visit our California State Railroad Museum.  It is an amazing place.  It is located in Old Sacramento, and helps make for a great visit.

Steve - Your new Black & White Photos group inspired me to try something a little different!  Thank you for the feature!

DeeDee - When kids from out of town visit me in Sacramento, I like taking them down to the museum if they like trains.

Alexandra - I'm almost certain that is the same ole locomotive that pulled a few trains I rode on as a kid.  But don't know for certain!

William - I think sepia, or black and white photography works so well in certain instances.  I wanted to try it here!

Myrl --- when we visited the Train Museum, it stoked an old desire to ride the train again. So my next field trip with my parents is to take them on the train from Oakland to Sacramento for a day trip.  Very soon!

Gorgeous photos Myrl. The sepia tones are very dramatic. I've always loved trains and the sound of trains from a distance. Commuter trains are still going strong here. I'd love to travel on a high speed train one day.

This brings back grand memories of my childhood. My grandfather worked for the great northern railway, my father was born in a company town just outside the eight mile tunnel and had to be transported 120 miles to the nearest hospital...

Myrl... Great post and I love the photo's... Growing up just south of Seattle trains played a large role in our area. One memory etched into my DNA is lying in bed at night end of summer, it's warm, the windows are open, and listening to the trains headed in and out of Seattle down the valley. Especially when it was foggy, you could hear them for miles. (Of course, back then, it was quiet around these parts.)

Myrl, I grew up just up the street from the Rail Road tracks, It is a sight to see those older passenger trains go up and down the tracks.  I wish that they did it more than just on special occasions, so younger folks could really get the feel of them.

Tony and Darcy - I wish rail travel would modernize and improve in this country.  We need an alternative to simply flying around everywhere.  In the past few days, a family member was trying to fly into Sacramento from Albany, New York.  The flight out of Chicago was delayed 2 hours, then 4 hours, then 6 hours, and then ultimately just cancelled. and it meant an overnight layover.  Important medications where in the checked luggage because getting them through security in carryon luggage seemed a hassle.  It was a nearly impossible to retrieve the luggage that night, to get to the medications.  It simply isn't as relaxing or as fun to fly anymore.  Trains weren't/aren't perfect, but they are an alternative!  I also think they are important in a global economy, where our infrastructure can provide as important a competitive edge as other factors.

Rene' - I think trains are etched into the DNA of a lot of folks who have shuffled around this planet long enough.  I remember those sounds you talk of.  Even in my own community, where the tracks are a couple miles away, on a foggy night, I can sometimes hear the trains as they roll through!  Wonderful stuff!

Paul - The railroads seemed to be the catalyst that brought a lot of my family members off the farms.  It seems that in the 1940s, if they weren't farming, they were working for one RR company or another.

Mitchell - When I visited New York City a couple years ago, I was amazed at the train system in the area.  Also, Europe has an amazing system.
