Take me home

Just watched the season finale of Harry's Law, with Kathy Bates...  I had it DVR'd, and just saw it tonight.

Harry sang a goodbye song to her recently deceased ex-husband at the end of the episode.  It's a lesser-known song by Tom Waits that she adapted and sang on the show.

She's not a good singer, but she did it justice... it made me cry.  It didn't help that I'd just learned that Harry's Law, a show that I'd come to enjoy, has been cancelled.  I sought it out online, but couldn't find a downloadable copy.  Apparently is a bonus track from a 1982 Album of the soundtrack of One from the heart... a forgettable film by mega-director Frances Ford Coppolla, staring Teri Garr and Frederick Forrest.  (I don't blame you for not knowing it).

See if you can watch this without tearing up.  It's typical Tom Waits with his gravely voice, emoting all over the place.

Alan - I can't believe another good show has been canceled.  I blame the low rating solely on the time slot!  : (

Alan, we just watched the show too and were commenting on what a fine show it has turned out to be.  If its been canceled then all I can say is that news really sucks.  Are we doomed to be force fed reality shows?  TV is so close to being discarded in this household.  BTW...great video.

This is a tear-jerker and perfect for the show because Bates tells us she doesn't sing well, but did a good job with it and it made me cry. Now I am crying because I, too, just found out that NBC has canceled this show. What are they thinking? Good writing, good acting, good messages, good Sunday night tv for those of us who don't watch football, reality tv, sarcastic sitcoms...

Thanks for the video. I love this song! (and I'm assuming it was Tom Waits' voice at the very end.

GwenEllyn, I couldn't agree more.  David E. Kelley creates television art.  But good art doesn't always sell - maybe in retrospect.  I've loved every show he's ever created and written, including Harry's Law.  A fitting finale on a sad night...

Good morning Alan. I too watched the show and was moved by the song and the effort. I am really bummed the show was cancelled.

Home is where the hearth is.

Laura - if it were soley the time slot, I would imagine they would have changed slots.  I just don't think that Kathy Bates is a sexy enough lead for the public.  (And I believe that's why they surrounded her with sexy co-stars) Personally, I think she's terrific!

Mona - there's less and less worth watching.  (gawd, when did I start channeling my father?)

GwenEllyn - it was, indeed, Tom Waits at the end... and that's how I found the song, by googling his name.

Mr. Pete - David E. Kelley has a good track record.

Shelia - me too.

Hi Alan - I thought I knew most of Tom Waits' songs - I'm a huge fan - but I hadn't heard that one before. It's typical, in that it's awesome. Thanks.

Alan, this was a good show, and like so many other shows it might just get picked up by the smaller networks and continue the run. NBC hasn't been known for their long term shows anyway
