Favorite Plants of the Day From My Arvada CO Garden

(This post was originally written in 2010.  Our bloom season is still a couple of weeks ahead of schedule, so these plants are all in bloom today, May 27, 2012)

My Arvada, Colorado yard is packed full of gardens, and I love them. They add so  much beauty and pleasure to my life.

I started sharing a favorite plant of the day on Facebook, and so many people told me they were using my tips, and keeping track of them for when they have their own garden. So of course, I thought a blog series would be a great idea!

Here you go – three at a time! And here’s a link so you can read my next high country garden's fave bloomers post.

June 16 – Favorite plant of the day – mockorange ‘summersweet’. Blooms in mostly shade and smells like gardenia  (I do absolutely love this plant. It just gets better every year!)

June 17 – Favorite plant of the day – clematis Durandii – cuz it starts to bloom early (has been over a week already), blooms all summer, and has these gorgeous big blue blossoms. (I thought I had lost this one last year (2011). For some reason, one by one the branches died to the ground.  But she's back strong this year!)

June 18 – Fav plant of the day – true, she has delicate pink blooms that butterflies love, and the dark stems are dramatic even when bloom is done, but what I really love about this plant is her awful name – beardtongue.  (2012 - Beardtongue's blooms are just starting to open up today.)

Joetta. Your flowers are so pretty. I haven't spent any time in the garden this year. That darn real estate keeps getting in the way. I really miss it.

Lucky you to have a green thumb. I just hired someone to take care of my plants and flowers. I just can't deal anymore. Too much work and no time to do it!

Hi Joetta,

Thank you for sharing the photos of your favorite flowers of the day.  It does sound like you have some amazing gardening abilities.  Thanks for sharing the tips.

At the moment, my yard has some perennials that are just now starting to bloom.  I've also had the opportunity to watch a herd of deer "visit" our yard on a daily basis.   The image of deer standing in the middle of the flower bed closest to the patio outside of my office has pretty much deterred any of my annual desires to purchase more flowers to plant.

I hope you have a wonderful day.

Sondra

Belinda - I actually put off getting my RE license for several years, because I knew it would make me busiest during gardening season.  Some years the gardens don't look perfect, but I can still manage to get an appealing close-up shot by at least weeding in the immediate vicinity!

Janis - believe it or not, taking care of gardens for a living has always been a dream of mine.  Recently, I was asked to take care of the gardens at a Victorian mansion in Denver. You should have seen what I envisioned! But the gardens were so small and uninspiring, I passed.

Sondra - deer can be a huge problem.  There are a lot of plants that deer aren't interested in, most gardening catalogs now carry icons indicating such. Almost all of my plants are perennials, I only plant annuals in a couple of window boxes.
