In Defense of the Half Dollar
Recently I explored the surfaces of a $1 coin and commented on its durability over its noted (or is it billed) counterpart in paper. I felt that it had probably not achieved a reasonable position in the currency.
Interesting reader comments gave reasons of why paper over coin for convenience, weight etc. Some readers had moved on to carrying cards only for all purchases etc leaving us "old timers" who used change being relegated to a dinosaur category.
So, because of changing times and attitudes and with the risk of having to find examples in museums, I have included here for record my adventures with a Half Dollar (sounds much more elegant than 50 cents),
Underused, under utilized and reasonably rare in financial transactions today, perhaps the Half Dollar once had a bigger role than just a collector's item. It is a token that contains a lot of symbolism, even hope and direction.
