Tandem Skydiving - The ultimate in trusting who we hire!
Two weeks ago, on Mother’s Day, May 13, 2012, my son and I experienced our first tandem jump from a perfectly functioning airplane.I posted the video of my jump on my ActiveRain blog as well as on YouTube.
My jump was all about a demonstration of trust and sharing the experience with my son on Mother's Day. I did research on the company I chose to hire. I also asked a lot of questions ... including - "Are you sure my harness is tight enough?"
As a San Jose real estate agent and San Jose short sale specialist, I take my clients' trust very seriously. I know they are depending upon me to do my job and achieve their desired results. One mistake could result in my clients having a bad experience.
I just watched a news update on my Bay Area local news. The news reporter interviewed the woman seen in this video in the comfort of her home. She had just turned 80 prior to making the jump. She is now 81 years old.
She was calm and seemed to have a sense of humor as she was being interviewed for the local news. She said:
You have to have a sense of humor about these things;
The instructor did not push me … he had to give me a little nudge;
You do what you have to do in these situations – I just hung on; and
I am actually glad my shirt blew up over my eyes because I could not really see anything. All I had was a little peephole.
You can see how lose her harness is. I am not a subject matter expert - I only have one tandem jump on my resume. I do know from having worn a harness that mine was not visibly loose. If it had been, I would have said something!
I also know there is a proper way (because the professional I hired taught me) to make a tandem jump. I suspect, and we will never know, that if she had been in proper position when jumping from the plane, she may not have slipped out of the harness.
If my client began to resist like this woman is visibly resisting, that is a time to retreat, pull back, and regroup. It is not a time to push anyone into anything (buying, selling, or jumping), even if their decision had already been made.
The outcome could have been disastrous. Whether jumping from an airplane or buying or selling a home, ask yourself, metaphorically speaking, who is packing your parachute. This is a perfect example of trusting those we hire.

Gary, Thank you! I'd never had jumping on my bucket list. This was something I feel strongly that I was called to do. I will look into IREBN ... thanks!
I had not seen the whole video until just now and it does seem like she was not ready to go as she kept hold on to the plane. Wow, it is amazing she is alive. I did see the owner of the company making it sound like it was no big deal. Slipping out of the harness seems like a very big deal to me. I don't think I am going to jump out of a plane any time soon. Not one of my dreams (at least not yet).
Kathleen --- When I saw the video of the woman slipping out of her harness, all I can think of is my mother.....OMG OMG OMG. I shared it on Facebook. Unbelievable.
Ute, I missed the owner's comment ... of course it would be played down. The video and the actions of the jumpers speak volumes ... IMO. It was fully understood before my jump that if I changed my mind ... the jump would not take place. Perhaps that is why they put me last (LOL).
Pacita, It makes my heart stop and skip a few beats. Thankfully the woman survived.
Kathy, Good point - a lot of Faith! I feel I was called to make the jump. There was an even bigger reason for me making the jump that has not yet been revealed to me.
Mike, I sent the video to my son ... his response was: "Holy Crap! See, I take a different lesson from that video ... don't fight it. When you fight life, you slip out of your harness." Where did he get such wisdom?
Hi Kathleen - Years ago I took lessons to make a solo jump, but circumstances prevented me from finishing the course and making my first solo jump. I watched your tandem video and now I want to do that!
Trust is the most important element in many a transaction. You experienced trust and then saw a like situation with the 80-year old woman. Great post Kathleen. Trust is paramount!! I truly believe that the woman did have trust in her partner. He was probably saying "Hold on, I got you" the entire fall.
Susan, It makes me smile to know that you now want to do it! Go for it! Let your inspiration lead the way. Make sure you get a video of your first solo jump.
Carla, I believe she had trust in her partner as well. He likely used super-human strength to do what he did ... hold onto her the entire time ... and manage to pull the cord to open the parachute as well. It probably was a good thing she was in the position she was in ... least able to resist ... and just ride it out.
Adam, I promise you it will be long before I turn 80! Thanks for your comment.
WOW! Kathleen. Now, I know why I didn't join Special Forces when I asked early in my military career, Jumping out of a perfectly good airplane was certainly not on my "Wish List", but my hat is off to you for giving it a try. That was more than Trust, You had to have a lot of Courage too. You are absolutely right about "Trust". The 80 year old lady had to completely trust her partner, and I know our clients must completely trust us with every deal, are things will not go very well in our relationships.
I once had skydiving on my bucket list, but have scratched it off after watching the 80 year old nearly slide out of her harnass. I have put a swim from San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf, to Alcatraz, in its place. I'd rather deal with cold water and sharks:-)
Jerry, I know that if you had joined Special Forces you would have been amazing ... cause that is just who you are ... excelling at whatever you endeavor. Jumping took courage ... but it started with decision to do it. Trust is essential in all that we do. As my son recently shared ... don't fight life ... if we do we will slip out of our harness.
Myrl, The only way I would swim with sharks is if I were in a cage! I don't mind freezing cold water. If I were to die I would rather plummet and splat to the ground than be in the jaws of a shark. The news coverage and hearing what the woman had to say certainly puts a different light on what appears to be happening in the video. Thank you for your comment.
Christine, It seems that these past few years in particular I've received valuable lessons in trust. Each lesson helps me to engage even deeper with my clients. Trust is something that I relate to in so many aspects of daily living.
Deborah, Thank you. My son was surprised when I asked him to join me. When I explained why I felt compelled to jump, he completely understood.
Connie, Having the experience of one jump (LOL) it is reasonable to believe that her tandem jumper hit the ground first and that protected her from harsh impact to the ground. She sure seems to be OK wth the entire experience. What a truly amazing woman she is.

Kathleen- kudos to you for doing that tandem jump. It is about trust and I'd throw in some faith and "guts"! Bravo to you!!!
Kathleen, I saw that interview on TV. She was a good sport, but what a disaster she nearly had. Whew! You're jump went a lot better. 8-)

Kathleen,
Yes, yes, yes. That's fine about "trust" and a good point, but I think you're nuts. I'll check your video to confirm my opinion.
Lloyd, I actually said to one of my clients "did you know you hired a crazy lady?" (LOL)!!! This jump was something I just needed to do.

Hi Kathleen,
It's quite the experience isn't it? I really enjoyed this posting and look forward to hearing about your second jump!

Kathleen - I think that hiring a Realtor you trust is very important. Jumping out of an airplane with someone, WOW! That's even more so!
Wow....that is all I can say...i heard that on TV and about croaked....glad yours went well...and I love the comparison to our industry!!!
Kathleen, I think that would have kept me from jumping. I don't know what body part she landed on but I'm sure it hurt.
