Avoid Poison Ivy When Building a New Home in Newburgh NY
Do You Know What it Looks Like?
Living in the Hudson Valley has many beautiful wooded areas for new homes. New construction is built on at least an acre of property as per town requirements to accommodate the standards of a particular location. Although the Hudson Valley countryside is amazingly beautiful, care needs to be taken when wandering through the woods when the building process starts.
During the construction of a new home, the area being cleared for the foundation is fun to explore. This helps to envision where this new home will come to life. Spring is the season when Poison Ivy begins anew. It is never really dormant, but in the winter, contact with the plant is less likely. Being careful to avoid the poison ivy is relatively easy. You just need to know what to look for.
Facts about Poison Ivy:
350,000+ people a years in North America are affected and you need know
- The oil in the plant binds to the skin on contact causing an itchy rash
- Scratching the blisters does not cause spreading
- Oil remains on clothes and pets
- Usually the rash develops within one week
- Wear long pants when walking in the woods
- Treat with Calamine Lotion, "Ivy Dry", and Oatmeal Baths
- Poison ivy does not like arid locations, and is not found in Europe
- Burning the plants & inhaling the smoke can cause serious lung problems
At this time of year the plants are baby sized leaves and more on the reddish and shiny side. The colors change during the season and becoming greener during the summer. Again in fall the reddish color returns to the larger size leaves. It has been said that the more shiny leaves have more oil in them and more virulent.
As a child we played in our backyard that had a wooded area. At a very young age we learned the saying “in groups of three leave it be”. This is in reference to the leaf patterns of the plant. Now you know what it looks like. Still even with all I know about this plant I must have brushed against a tiny leaf or two without knowing, as i now have the telltale signs of the rash. It is the risk of walking in the woods with builders and clients. Itchy yes, and it will remind me to warn my clients and other realtors showing my listings.
When building a new home in Newburgh NY, or just hiking and wandering around in the woods, pay attention to the vines around you and try to avoid the Poison Ivy.
