To smoke or not to smoke, that is the question...

What's that smell???

I had an appointment to show a listing recently.  The seller had told me to come at 3:30 because another agent was going to show the house at 2:45.  Not a problem, if we get there and they are still showing the house, we will wait in the car.

We arrived around to 3:25 and there were some cars in the driveway, one was definitely a Realtor due to the signs on his doors.

As we sat and watched the people going in and out of the house, we noticed that they were all smoking cigarettes.  That wasn't the first thing I noticed because in the listing it said please remove shoes.  These people were not taking their shoes off and they felt the need to smoke in the house.  At first I thought it might have been the owners who had stepped outside while the house was being shown but everyone climbed into the Realtor's SUV and drove off together.

My clients, being from out of state, asked if it was normal to smoke in someone else's house here in Washington.  I told them, that there are no rules prohibiting smoking while on tour, I think that it is more proper to step outside as a sign of respect. Also, if some requests shoes to be removed, we take off our shoes.

As I stepped inside, I looked around to see if there were ashtrays or some other reason that these people thought it was OK to smoke.  I couldn't find any ashtrays, but we could smell the previous visitors smoke.

I sell homes to smokers and nonsmokers however my clients who smoke, never smoke in my car or in a house we're looking at.

I got a call, from a very dissatisfied seller, reading me the Riot Act about smoking in her house.  She said that we even left a cigarette butt in the master toilet. I told her that it was not my clients or me but we had witnessed the previous people who had toured the home smoking.  I said that she might wanna call him!

"He's not returning my calls!" she said.

Do you allow your clients, who smoke, to smoke in other people's houses you tour?

Wow. For a realtor to even think it's okay to smoke in someone else's home is beyond comprehension. This is someone else's property, and to disrespect it is to disrespect not only the homeowner AND their broker, but also the rest of us in this profession, and those realtors who will be showing the home later. The same can be said for the shoes, but the smoking bit is sticking in my head. If this was the homeowner's listing broker that did this, that contract would be in serious jeopardy, if not outright canceled.

Even if there were ashtrays and the like out in the open indicating a potential smoker's household, it still isn't right to smoke in a listing that you're showing. Just plain disgusting, unprofessional and rude!

As a former three pack a day addict I have to say I never died over waiting an hour or so until in an appropriate location to light up.

The wrong goes beyond common courtesy, what if a left behind butt was not totally extinguished and started a fire. What if an ash was dropped on some possession of the sellers or a rug.

Just walking back into your home to the smell of cigarettes could be really bothersome to the seller either as nonsmokers or, perhaps even more so, reformed smokers.

Just BAD!

I think that smoking in the home is plan wrong.  Even the smokers I know would not do that.  It is just rude.  No excuse.

She should report this agent to his broker. I'm sorry this is common courtesy. I would never allow my clients to smoke in my car or a home I was showing. What is wrong with this agent?

Is this a trick question????????????  What type of person would smoke in a home they are considering buying and the bigger question, what type of Realtor would allow it?  I would probably call the agent myself and tell them that the owner thought it was me or in this case you and to knock it off.

Oh and did I mention the fire martial, and please explain this to the owners of the property in writing that all sorts of H - - - can follow from this !   Eeeekkkk !

It never would even cross my mind that someone would think of smoking in a home that was not theirs and not ask.

Very bizzare.

Hi Paul: Courtesy and consideration are the key words. If only any person can practice this in any given situation, we surely differentiate ourselves as the highest form of homo sapiens.

Paul - Thankfully I've never had this happen on either side. Of course it is totally unprofessional to allow potential buyers to smoke in someone else's home. We can't even smoke in public restaurants and so forth. Not sure why someone would think they could smoke in someone's home.

Most smokers I know are much more considerate.

That is ridiculous, why would you stop and have a cigarette when you are looking at a home and why would any agent allow that!!!!

Absolutely NOT!  It's rude and disrespectful.  And as homeowners, they shouldn't have to tell people not to smoke in their home when they come in to view.

Absolutely not!  It is easy to get the buyers not to smoke, in fact, I have never even had one ask to do so in someone's house.

Now, the tough thing is to get our seller's not to smoke in or near thier homes.  This is a HUGE turn off for buyers!

Perhaps smokers would respond to this differently, but even if you smoke, I think it's absolutely tasteless and classless to do it in anyone's house or car if you haven't asked permission first.  It's not a minor thing...like chewing gum.  You're blowing out carcinogens, and something that smells so nasty most SMOKERS don't like the smell of it.  Unbelievable.
