Governor Christine Gregoire is proposing to have sobriety checkpoints in the State of Washington.  This is in reaction to a high number of drunken driving fatalities.  Washington State is one of ten states that do not allow sobriety checkpoints.  You can see a video here from KIRO.

The Washington State Supreme Court has found sobriety checkpoints unconstitutional so it would require a change in state law.  The United States Supreme Court has found sobriety checkpoints constitutional under strict guidelines.

An article entitled "Gregoire wants to allow sobriety checkpoints" by Jackson Holtz, Herald Writer goes into detail.

I have gotten Washington State Drunk Driving Statistics from 1982 to 2005.

UPDATEHere is The Seattle Times article in the paper today.  Checking sobriety urged by Diane Brooks.

Here in Cali we allow them and I am for them. Yes, they cause a backup and sometimes cause a nuisance, but if it protects me, family, friends, or whoever from something far worse like a fatal accident, why not?

I am for them also.  Drinking and driving is just plain stupid.

I think if it saves one life, it's worth the inconvenience to the rest of us.

Hi Collette, John and Ardell,

I have updated the post today with an article from today's Seattle Times.  It goes into detail as to how the checkpoints are supposed to work.  Thank you for your notes.  I agree that things need to be doing to get drunken drivers off of the road.  This is a start.  Also, stiffer penalties need to happen especially with repeat offenders.  Just the other day someone was arrested that had had 14 DUI's, please read The Seattle Times article by Jennifer Sullivan, "Lynnwood man held in 15th DUI arrest."  I heard that and thought "how could this possible happen, something is seriously wrong with this State."
