Look Who is Monkeying Around

This week I was at the Philadelphia Zoo in Pennsylvania. It open in 1874 and was the first zoo in the United States. It had 813 animals and now houses over 1300 animals; over 300 species and subspecies.
My absolutely favorite place at the zoo is to watch the monkeys. The zoo keeps their Gorillas in a wonderful 2.5 Acre Inside/Outside Primate Reserve.

These gorillas are called Western Lowland Gorillas from Africa and are commonly known as “Silverbacks.” They are now considered an endangered species due to the Ebola virus and to illegal poaching.

Facts: Gorillas are the largest and heaviest living primates; males 300-600 lbs, 6 ft tall and females about half the weight and approx. 5 ft tall.

They eat termites, seeds and grass. The zoo feeds them all types of fruit and vegetables, raisins, puffed cereal. The zoo grows hay and seeds in their primate reserve to try to encourage foraging skills.
In captivity, Gorillas live an average of 34-50 years. The longest living gorilla in captivity, Massa, lived to be 54 years at the Philadelphia Zoo until his death in 1984.Wild gorillas only live about 35 years.

They are such amazing animals and you almost feel they c an communicate with you. I could stand there for hours just watching them run around in their beautiful Primate Reserve. If you live or are visiting nearby the Philadelphia Zoo in Philadelphia, PA, 19104.

Hi John,
They all came from the same continent so perhaps they are. I think they are such amazing animals and seem so smart.
