Lomo-ish - What the Heck is That? Confusing Photo Editing Terms

I love to play with different photo editing tricks when I have a spare moment or three, and today I was using Picasa (my favorite) - I have the latest PhotoShop but it takes a lot more than a moment or three to just open it up and it’s so fussy about how I do stuff. So if I’m just playing to kill time then it’s Picasa or iPiccy or PicMonkey.

I’ve tried all the various editing choices and never thought about why they were called what they are called. Today, I wanted to check out Lomo-ish; and this is what I found out.

Lomo is a type of camera - Russian-made Lomo LC-A to be precise. Built in the early 90's, it was cheap and not a good camera-the pictures came out with dark edges. For some strange reason a Lomo cult developed-and continues today. You can choose a Lomo-ish effect in most photo editing programs. Where did I learn all this knowledge? From a PhotoShop tutorial by Darren Rowse and several Google results.

Here’s a picture of a tray of coleus in our local landscape company; first one is the original.

coleus

This is Lomo-ish. Note the dark edges and harsher reds.
You can make the edges deeper or shallower and fade the edge color.

Inverted colors makes for some interesting pictures especially since you can play with the hues and fading. I kind of wish the coleus actually came in these colors.

This last one is heat map. Looks like an exploding planet.

There's also Orton-ish, Holga-ish, and HDR-ish. I'll get to those soon.

Okay, I went a little further than Lomo-ish but it's so much fun to play with a photo editing program. Now I have to teach them to my assistant, Shayna.

Darren Rowse's website is Digital Photography School and it covers just about everything.

Lomography has been gaining a lot of popularity lately! I think the resurge started with the reintroduction of the DianaF+ and Holga cameras in the mass market...Those are the original ways to get the "creative" photos - where the editing of the actual image happens while you take it. All the online programs these days (like Instagram) are secondary tools!

Hi Toni, I've used the lomo-ish effect for Halloween.   I enjoy iPiccy and you can download as many photos as you want.

Dianne - thanks for the app tip.

Myrl - I keep trying Photoshop but I don't have the patience with it that's needed at times. I think vignette is basically the same thing but more of a border. Lomo affects the whole picture.

John- I prefer Picasa to the Monkey but we all get comfortable with different things.

Al & Peggy - I learn so much from others in the Rain and from research for posts. It's so much fun!

Jeanne & Ralph - It does look kind of explosive!

Fred - it's called heat map so maybe it is thermal imaging digital style.

Anita - it sounds great to have a daughter who likes to do those things. I only have Shayna :)

Will N - anytime!

Will H - pick out a picture and just play. You'll be amazed what you can do.

William T - there is a trend towards sepia, black & white, you're right.

Kathleen - Thanks,  it will happen!

Sonia - thanks for the additional info. I didn't know that.

Rebecca - I use iPiccy quite a bit for editing too. I'll have to remember Lomo for Halloween. Sounds like a great idea, thanks.

Lomo-ish is such an interesting effect. Of course, it does look much better when you use a plastic camera (as those are the types of cameras typically used in lomography, like Sonia mentioned with Holga and Diana F+) and have regular old 35mm film developed from it. Certainly puts an interesting and very retro spin on shots. I have played around with a Diana and am actually very excited to save enough to get a Holga- they are fun toys to carry around.

Howdy and afternoon Toni

Toni my friend, it sure is fun to play around with the different features of photo program editors. As always you sure have done a mighty fine job of explaining the Lomo-ish effect feature.

I as think the last photo looks like a exploding planet.

Have a good one

Dale - thanks. It does look like that the more I look at it.

Aww, thanks, Rob.

William - glad to share!

Heather - that's true! I usually save the changed ones and the original so I can do something else with it.

Toni, I don't believe that it should be something everyone goes out to buy...but rather a fun toy to have if you have the income to spare for it. It isn't a necessity, and it's certainly more popular for the younger generation. Any plastic "toy" camera sells for around $40, plus the cost of film and development, so it isn't too terribly bad. But I do agree with you - photo editing is much more convenient, and free!

B&B - so glad you came back. Yes, you're right, the camera is inexpensive. I guess I hate carrying extra stuff around if I can do it at home on my computer :).

And thank you for the additional info in your previous comment.
