Worthwhile Do-It-Yourself Website Optimization Tips

I get asked alot about search engine optimization.  My focus now is Search Advertising (paid search) but I do provide tips and techniques to my clients I feel are easy to accomplish and won't take more than 10 minutes to do...

OPTIMIZATION TIPS The following website optimization tips are provided as a service of eSourceAgent.com.  Please visit www.esourceagent.com/demo to find out about us.

TIP # 1:  Submit your site to Google in 30 seconds...

Go to the first page on your site and copy the web address.  It will look like http://www.mywebsite.com.

Now open up the Google site submission page at www.Google.com/addurl/

Paste your address in the URL field and enter the "squiggly letter" security word that they show you.  That's it! You have successfully submitted your site to Google.  If you can access all the pages on your site from the home page through links then there is no need to submit other pages.  You will want to individually submit any deep pages (pages that have no links from the front page).

TIP #2: Submit your site to DMOZ.org

Submit your site to DMOZ.org.  Google uses the DMOZ directory to supplement its search results.  Click through the categories until you find one you believe your site matches.  Then hit the suggest URL link and submit your site.  This process can take a while because the categories are human monitored and your site will be reviewed prior to inclusion.

TIP #3: Submit your site to YAHOO!

Add your site to the Yahoo! Directory.  http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/dir/suggest/index.html

TIP #4: Submit your site to MSN

Add your site to MSN.com.  http://beta.search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx

If you site is currently listed in Google, you may be penalized for submitting it more than once.  So if you type your sites name in Google and it shows up there is no need to submit it again.

I never heard that you were penalized for submitting it more than once.  I submit once a month at least on all three major search engines.  I am on page one on google and a few others

There is ways to be penalized for submitting your url to google, which usually include the automated submission tools. However manually submitting your URL to google is like requesting google to look at your website. You can also leave comments, which act like a suggestion to google on where to index your website.

As a whole you will not be penalized for manually submitting your URL to Google.

Thanks, I have noticed other companies using my name and riding, so to speak.  I don't know them and certainly, don't want my name associated with them:)Though, I am a small independent and don't hit the number 1 & 2 pages.  I really appreciate your quick response. We all love Google.  The Christmas decorations on the letters was too cute!

Mark,

DMOZ is supposed to be one of the top players in SEO, so I submitted my site there 10 months ago and it hasn't been included yet. If that is how they work, how relevant is the site anyway? Good info.

Esko,

Yes I am not sure what is going on with DMOZ especially the Real Estate section.  I have been getting extremely slow/no response when submitting to DMOZ lately in more than one category. Even when I follow the special instructions for Realtors when submitting. Maybe the DMOZ editors have defected to Wikipedia.

The bad news is Google directory is still DMOZ.

The good news is that you can still be indexed in Google even without a directory listing.

I submitted my site to DMOZ several years ago and am still waiting for inclusion.  All related categories don't have a dedicated editor.  I thin it is a shame that domz has such an effect on google rank yet is nearly impossible to get these days.

Actually DMOZ effect is questionable at this point you can get just as good result from being in other directories.  Mark has been talking with us in the trewnhces about changing the MMM's.

Last update of the DMOZ / Google was Jan 12 2008 and updates about once a month or so we have seen long lapses in the past.   The monthly update schedule tells us that Google does not view the directory as a priority.

only do any of these if you are not currently in the search engines, if you do a search for your web site address and your site comes up, there is no need to resubmit.
4:05pm • #22

Robert,

Good point there is no need to submit your site if you are already indexed.  Although ther is no harm in doing so.

Actually not everyone would agree with you on that. Some experts do believe it can hurt you to resubmit, most agree if you resubmit a lot it will hurt you.

Robert,

Thanks for the reply.  Actually I think most experts including Google themselves would agree with me in this discussion.  What the experts are talking about is using automated software or services to submit and resubmit your site to the search engines this is considered spamming and can, according to Google,  have a detrimental effect.  If you submit to the URL's as described above you wont be penalized for the submission.

See the Google guidelines at...

http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35291

If you would be penalized for multiple submissions then all unscrupulous SEO companies in the world would sit around and submit every site that appeared above theirs in the search rankings.  My feeling is that if you are using an autmated tool that submits like WebPosition Gold (This software is named by Google as an offender)  that would be directly against the guidleines.  Manual submissions are fine. They simply ignore multiple "manual" submissions.

My question will be what will be the point of submitting your website to google or yahoo if your website is not optimized. The first thing to do is work on your website by optimizing it with the right keyword and then other things will follow.

12:32pm • #26

Submit the site - the earlier the better.  Even if all you have is a brochure site with your name and occupation then submit it.

What is "Optimized"?  Do all optimized sites rank well?  I see many sites showing up in search results that have not been "optimized".

Try this, realtors work hard on name recognition - does your website show up if someone types in your name?  This requires very little or no optimization at all.

If you submit your site prior to optimizing it the worst that can happen is that google will mis-categorize your site.  But guess what - google will be around again and they update their index frequently enough to catch that.  Have no fear!  The search engines are far more forgiving than the "SEO" experts would like people to believe.

If you do a good job of Web PR (link backs, blogs, etc.), a little SEO it is true that your site will get indexed without the need to submit it.
