Believe it or Not You Can Get Around L.A. Without a Car

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Home Jane Realty BRE# 01439865

Believe it or not, it really is not that difficult to get around Los Angeles without a car.  I am living proof.

When we take our cars in for service, or body work or whatever in Los Angeles we almost always arrange for a ride, L.A. Busrent a car or, if we go to a dealership, get a loaner.  Take a bus?  What!  And heaven forbid we should consider walking.

Yesterday I took my car in for body work and was going to rent one for the two days it would take.  Then I thought I would see how I could survive two days without one.

The body shop is 3 blocks from my home.  I walked.

Lunchtime I walked the 8 blocks to the coffee shop where I usually spend my lunch hours with my computer.  And I walked the 8 blocks back.  No rides for me.

I didn’t anticipate needing  to show any properties over the two days, but I ended up having to.  Panic set in.  But I calmed down and went to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority website and used their Trip Planner to get bus routes and times.  I walked the two blocks to the bus which arrived 2 minutes later exactly on time, and I caught my connection.  Be aware that you have to have exact change as none is given.  I overpaid for my trip by $0.60.  Also, don’t expect friendly, warm and fuzzy drivers, although maybe I was unlucky.

Don’t worry about the fact that a shocked friend might scream at you for not calling them to drive you, and then run over to where you are to pick you up and drive you back.  They are unenlightened.  There is a great public transit system in L.A. that can get you wherever you want to go.  No more car rentals for me.

Buying or Selling Los Angeles Real Estate

Buying or selling a Los Angeles home can be a daunting process in a city this size, especially if you’re new to L.A. Town. You’ll need a resident expert to show you around and help you narrow down the areas where you might like to live. I will help you find the perfect home in the right area to fit your lifestyle, budget and needs!

When I list and sell Los Angeles homes for my clients I strive to make the experience a pleasant one. My mission is to provide outstanding service while utilizing the best practices and systems available.

If you are an absentee owner, you’ll need someone to handle all the details that you can’t handle remotely. That’s where I come in – I’m there when you can’t be. I also specialize in lease property in Los Angeles.

Jane - What a great story to share with everyone.  Using the bus, mass-transit, or walking is a great way to save money, get exercise, and be environmentally friendly.  I'm very impressed you were even able to show property!  Enjoy your car independence!!!

Loved your post Jane. You eloquently pointed out how depended we are on our cars even though there are alternatives... you know... like walking! I have to say it is not easy to walk in South Florida because the humidity is so high you'd arrive soaking wet at your destination.

When I was a kid in the San Fernando Valley, the busses were very unreliable. Glad to hear that things have improved.

Jane, I was in LA once....not sure if I saw a bus...but a lot of people for sure.  Even though I am only three minutes by car to town and work... I drive... no buses, and to many dangerous curves in the road to walk :)

Rebecca,  the buses kind of blend in with all the cars here.

Public transportation here in Birmingham is nearly non-existent. I'm a bit gun shy anyway when it comes to riding the bus as a result of being robbed twice at bus stops.

I use public transit when I'm in Europe and NYC, but I must admit in the 20+ years I've lived in the Los Angeles area I have never boarded a public bus--just planes, trains and cars.  You're braver than I am...

Jane, I lived in Reno for 3 years without a car - that was in the 80s, cabs were cheap in the winter.

I could never go carless here, even for a day - summer heat and all ...
