14 Comments on Can We Trust NAR's New Pending Home Sales Report?
there is many ways to spin a statistic. didn't nar's former perz make a name for himself by publishing a book about market stability two minutes before the crash?
Hah, wouldn't surprise me Bianca.
The unfortunate thing is the statistics can be manipulated just as public opinion can be swayed by the media. At the end of teh day the housing market and trends are all local and these national data sets mean little.
Joe, discombobulated and confused! Nice thing about statistics is you can make them say almost whatever you want them to say. They should stick to the facts.
Orwell's 1984...the novel and the movie makes this point expertly...One week chocolate rations are up and the following week they are down and the week after that there was never any chocolate...
I agree...what is the point of "estimating" and then revising in this market? Numbers don't tell everything anyway. And like my son always says, 97% of all statistics are "made up" :)
Hi Joe - As a former (and probably presently covert) economist, I've been embarrassed for years by NAR and their "chief economists'" shoddy and cynical approach to what ought to be pretty straight forward reporting of numbers - as you so aptly demonstrate. Their current stooge Yun is a continuation of the tradition, and the whole organiziation has long ago lost its focus on serving its members.
Hi Joe, Loss of credibility, or public perception of same, costs all of us our reputation ! Have a great weekend !
I have mixed feelings about the NAR numbers sometimes they make sense and other times they are "spun" I don't get it. We need them to be reliable so that we can maintain credibility
The NAR numbers are widely-believed to be myopic and somewhat self-serving. I think most people understand that a trade group is going to do their best to create a demand for people to use their product or service. No harm in that, I suppose. People in this market are smart enough to look around them and see the evidence for (or against) purchasing or selling a home.
Joe,
Excellent breakdown for Tallahassee area. Love the "true data". We are definately still in for a bumpy ride.
Now can you help fix the job numbers? They don't seem very "REAL" either? LOL
All the best, Michelle
Wow, great post and great presentation. I like the idea of your eBook!
'Softly reported' LOL. You mean, wish it would all just go away.
Joe, thanks for helping us to wade through the numbers. Its too bad that NAR's credibility has fallen so low, they might as well just fire those folks and stop reporting numbers since few can trust them anymore.
Thanks also for the honesty in reporting, good or bad news, we need to know the truth if we are to properly plan our businesses.
