So what's in a name like John McCormack anyway?

Whats in a name like mcCormack anywayOver the past 50+ years I have enjoyed the same name, yes the same one my parents decided to crown me with although from what I understand it took a few days after delivery to come up with such a unique name like “John”.  I like my name just fine and have no plans on changing it although my wife does call me Mac and my AR friends call me Q.  John is not often misspelled although I have seen is spelled J.O.N maybe for those that didn't fare so well in spelling, just kidding.

It’s the last name McCormack that gets botched most often.  The most common spelling variation is McCormick that is with an “i” not the “a” on the end.  These two variations come from either having an Irish background being the McCormack or a Scottish background being the McCormick. I have seen many other contorted spellings as well including Mcormick, McComack, Mckormick, McKormack and others.

While none of this really adds up to a hill of beans  it sure can make a huge difference when someone is conducting a Google or online search.  For example if someone were to Google John McCormack Albuquerque or John McCormack Realtor  the return results will ring out like a high paying slot machine, but if someone Googles John McCormick Albuquerque the results will be far different and not nearly as much about yours truly, there is however a local Doctor by that name..I bet he is an awesome Doctor too! :>)

So what's in a name like John McCormack anyway?  If you are promoting yourself as most of us do then getting the name correct is very important.  While writing this blog and researching the names I did find it quite interesting that Google is actually smart enough to recognize many of the misspellings and directed that search to me..I love Google.  Now If I can just get everyone to spell Albuquerque correctly.  Sigh.....

John, also I might add that correctly spelling someone's name in a letter or email is high respect and courtesy and we should endeavor to do that. Even USING their name in speech makes them better feel that we care.

I've been thinking about this lately....the idea that my name could be tough to find. I have a "middle" name on somethings but do not use it in daily life. I've been thinking about a corny slogan of some kind, and have a post in the works on this very subject. Interesting.

I'm so glad mine is easy to remember, and I recently changed my primary domain name to match my name, so that's important.  But for some reason a lot of people call me "Richard" ... and its been like that my whole life, and I have no idea why.

My brother used to outside Albuquerque, and I could never remember how to spell it correctly.  I always had to look it up.

I think the popular spice brand might be your nemesis.  You may want to speak to them about changing :)

And now that you have slyly pushed all the possible spellings into one post they will find you.  You should make up a little rhyme or something with all the spellings and tag it onto things occasionally.

Great Blog John!  Of course mine is so easy that it could never be mispelled.  However, my full name is Jan.  Most of the time extra letters get tacked on.

When searching for your name, Google will remember you on your own computer.  Try this at the office and see what happens.  When I search RE/MAX Arizona, I'm front page on my computer, but not at the office.  Made me feel like a dunce when I told my broker I was on the front page of Google. Geez!

My simple name has several variations which gives me trouble sometimes when someone tries to find me onlin or email me. I am Alan however there is Allan, Alen and Allen. I wonder if my parents some how knew I would be such a poor speller that they internally gave me a name that I had four chances of spelling correctly.

John - I"ve gotten so used to my name being misspelled that I don't notice it much most of the time.

I'm Marte, Marta, Martha, and Marty. But the one I saw on an envelope that puzzled me was Mort. I think that one also called me Mister.

John:

I thought that with a first name of "Evelyn" that I would be the only one.  Even though Kennedy is more common, there couldn't be other Evelyn Kennedys.  Wrong.  Google alerts is always alerting me to the fact that Evelyn Kennedy was mentioned here or there, most commonly through funeral announcements.   Its a small world after.

Hi John, what a clever post!  My first name is often botched, and there's two ways to go with the last.  I have to specify that there is no "d" in my last name:)

This is true - I was googling your name just the other day (when I emailed you) and I spelled your name wrong (oops).  As for John....my dad is a Jon (spelled J.O.N) :-) and my husband is a John.  And we all work in the same brokerage, Jon Gosche Real Estate - which makes it confusing when someone calls and asks for John.  I have to ask if they are asking for my dad or my husband, the broker or the short sale expert, Gosche or Boles :-) -Kasey
