FAQ ABOUT HOME STAGING -  You don't smell anything in my house right now do you?

As a Burlington Stager, part of my job is to detect odors in a home. If I find any, I have to tell my Client the truth.

Yes, I can smell dog, kitty litter, food, mildew, room fresheners etc. The home owner probably doesn't smell these things anymore. It's just part of home to them.

Buyers will pick up on any scent right away. That's why we Stagers maintain that the best scent is clean.

Be aware that as the Seasons transition and the furnace or air conditioner is not moving the air as much, the house can take on a stale stuffy smell.

When selling, I recommend:

  1. a thorough Spring cleaning to give the house that 'clean' scent.
  2. shampooing carpeting to freshen it up.
  3. washing and removing pet beds.
  4. being extra vigilant with the kitty litter and cage bedding.
  5. to avoid cooking spicy meals, fish, cabbage products or any other food you know hangs around after the meal.
  6. cooking more meals on the BBQ to keep the smells outside.
  7. not using room fresheners. You may pick the wrong scent for that Buyer or they may be allergic to them.
  8. being aware that if your pet enjoys the sofa with you the sofa probably smells like a dog. Clean it.
  9. emptying garbage cans in kitchens.
  10. cleaning the stove inside and out.
  11. making all bathrooms sparkling clean. Those showers can be a source of mildew.
  12. running a dehumidifier in the basement to keep down the summer damp smell.
  13. emptying clothes hampers, changing bed linens regularly and discarding old sneakers.

It can be hard to detect these scents yourself. That's one of the many reasons why a Staging Consult can be so useful to you.

Stagers have a Buyer's nose ;).
