I grew up in Southeast Houston in a very working-class neighborhood. None of the families there had much, but we all had enough. In high school, my friends and I would dream about living in big fancy houses with swimming pools and beautiful furnishings.
One of the things we did for fun was drive to Friendswood to look at the “mansions”. They weren’t really mansions, but to us they seemed like it – big houses on one-acre lots with pools and tennis courts and circular, gated driveways. Oh, they seemed so fancy to me at that time!
We used to drive by the large, beautiful homes and imagine who lived in them. I remember someone saying they thought the person who lived in the big house with the tennis courts on Sunset was the person who invented the hula-hoop. Not likely, but we had fun guessing!
Now all these years later, I find myself fortunate to live in the wonderful community I used to dream about. The houses don’t seem so much like “mansions” now, although there are probably a few that would qualify. But, I love the professional and friendly people who live in the well-kept, pretty neighborhoods in Friendswood.
There are so many things I love about living in Friendswood.
I love the beautiful creeks that meander and criss-cross through the community – Chigger Creek, Clear Creek, Coward’s Creek and Winding Creek. They add such beauty to this little town!
I love the convenience of being close to I-45, Galveston, the Kemah Boardwalk, medical facilities, and great shopping. Friendswood is tucked away, but not so far back that you can’t get to where you need to go quickly.
I love the trees, undeveloped areas, and the wildlife that makes a home here in Friendswood. It’s not unusual to see critters of all kinds scampering about along the creeks and tree-covered land. In the neighborhoods, you can always find bunnies, squirrels, raccoons and a large variety of birds living peacefully with their human neighbors.
I love the community activities – the outdoor concerts in the park during the summer, parades, festivals, craft shows and so much more. There is always something fun to do here.
Friendswood is a great place to live, and I feel very fortunate to be here, after all of those years of dreaming about it when I was young.
