Real Estate, Just Like Baseball

By
Real Estate Agent with Crown Key Realty

One of the really interesting things about baseball is that you have never seen it all. Doesn't matter how many game you watch, things that you've never seen before happen. Baseball announcers mention it all the time, they'll say something like, “well, that's one I have never seen before”. Happens every week.

Real Estate is the same. The rules for each transaction (just like in baseball) are written down and every agent is supposed to follow them. New things still happen.

My broker called me a few mornings ago to say there was a message on our office answering machine that “sort of” has to do with a transaction I am involved in as the listing agent. The message was from a person, claiming to be a Realtor in another city and a parent of one of the people purchasing the property. The message was “I want to be sure the selling agent is receiving a fair commission” Really! A number was left and a return call requested. Susan said “Dale handle it how ever you want”.

I quickly called the selling agent, well respected Realtor in the community and within the Real Estate community. When I explained what had happened, I could Hear her turn red with embarrassment. Did't need to see her. She said, “Yes I know the person, yes they are a Realtor and I CAN NOT BELIEVE YOU WERE CALLED”. Mortified I think is an appropriate word to use here. Then anger. I told the agent I wasn't upset and that we both had more important issues to use our time and energy on. I said lets just laugh and move on. I was thanked for my understanding and told the out of town Realtor parent would be called immediately.

The aftermath helped to clear things up. The agent in the transaction with me had received the buyers through a referral from the Realtor parent. The Realtor parent was making sure that they had received factual information about the transaction and being paid the proper referral fee. In other words the Realtor parent was protecting their interest in the transaction.

This is was one phone call unlike any I had ever had before. Strike three, she is outta here!

Hi Dale -- yes, that's the first time I have heard that and it tells a lot about the originating broker who seems to care more about his commission than the home his family is purchasing.

Dale,

RULES, really?  Sometimes I think they must just be suggestions because they are trampled upon so much.

Just when you think you heard it all.......
