Is this a safe neighborhood or what's the crime rate? (FAQ#4)

We work with many buyers that may not be familiar with all neighborhoods of Manhattan, they often ask us questions about the building and neighborhood, sometimes when we work with parents buying for children buyers, they are especially concerned about the neighborhood safety and crime rate.

As a licensed Real Estate professional, we can not legally answer this question since we do not have the specific statistics or accurate data of each neighborhood's crime rate.

Keep in mind that Manhattan New York is a city that almost never sleeps,
on the average, working professionals work long hours than usual, many leave work 6:30pm or much later, and then usually go out socializing with friends or dinner with friends until late. So at any given time, there are a lot of people walking on the street or even taking the public transit or subway. This is a city that you can walk anytime of the night and there will be other people on the street too.

For each neighborhood's specific crime rate, it is best to contact the local precinct or police station. We also ask our buyers to visit the neighborhood you are interested in in different times of the day, different days of the week, and perhaps sit around the coffee shop or restaurants in the neighborhood to see if you feel comfortable or not. In addition, we also recommend our buyers to buy in a 24 hours doorman building for added extra security, for resale value, full time doorman building is also very desirable among other home buyers.

We are very well versed in all neighborhood of Manhattan. To find a condo in a neighborhood of your preference, contact us today at (917) 837-8869 or email at Morgan.Evans@elliman.com

Morgan - Great information for potential buyers to have.  Calling the local authorities to find out what is going on at a specific location, or neighborhood is the best way to get crime rate information.

Great advice, Morgan. Whether a person is buying in a small town, a suburban neighborhood, or a large city, checking with the police department and visiting the area different times of day and days of the week is important. Chatting with the neighbors is another thing I suggest buyers do -- in the city it might be chatting with the barristas and shop keepers.
