I've been doing some research on statistics for mobile marketing this past year, and I thought I would share my results for those of you interested. It seems that more and more buyers are falling into the age categories of text message users.
November 2007 made headlines in the mobile industry as the total number of US subscribers reached 250 million. Just five years ago, 2002 marked a total of 140.7 million subscribers.
The Mobile Marketing Association reported that a survey found that 3 in 4 mobile phone subscribers (75%) use some form of text messaging.
Forrester research reported usage of text messaging per age group in December 2006. The results were:
18-24 = 76%
25-34 = 58%
35-44 = 43%
45-54 = 35%
55-64 = 22%
65 + = 19%
These statistics show a promising future for mobile marketing, as predicted. The age generation of users is increasing, allowing a broader target reach for businesses while promoting their products via mobile advertising. The industry has brought in a noteable $2.7 billion for 2007, is expected to double in 2008 and has been forecasted to reach $16.2 billion by 2011, reports eMarketer.com. Other forecasters have predicted anywhere from an $18 billion to $20 billion industry.
“Nothing capitalizes on the capabilities of mobile like retail. Shoppers are mobile. The shopping process is often spontaneous. The mobile phone is always on and always available. The mobile phone is an ideal platform for retailers to capture the moment and provide utility, value and even fun, while driving foot traffic and drive sales.” Mike Baker is VP and head of Nokia Ad Business
