Almost Heaven Habitat for HumanityProgress continues for the Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build house in White Sulphur Springs, WV, during the week of May 21-25. The volunteers from Youth Build in Huntington, WV, completed laying the footers, pouring concrete and installing the insulated concrete forms.  The volunteers were Johnny Stoker, 19, Richard Lee Lambert, 21, and their three instructors, Michael Murphy, Mark Jarrett, and Michael Anderson.

The volunteers worked really hard and even poured the concrete for the foundation of another Habitat house next to the Women Build house.

Patricia Sams future Habitat homeownerPatricia Sams is the future Habitat homeowner for this Women Build House.  As a single mom in the early 70’s, Patricia worked in the medical field to support her two children.  There was always enough money to pay bills and some left over to have fun and buy necessities, but the budget was tight.

The kids loved baking cookies and helping form them into their initials in the pan.  Holidays were always a festive time from baking Christmas Cookies to trimming the tree, wrapping presents and making memories.

In 1989, her son, Jody was killed in an auto accident.  Life as she and her daughter knew it was changed.  There were no more happy holidays, baking cookies or laughter.

Her daughter, Shannon, went away to college and Patricia took that opportunity to go to college as well.  After school, she lived in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alaska, and Texas.  She felt like she was always running away.

Patricia says that she was missing out of making memories with her daughter and three beautiful grandchildren, so she decided to come back home and quit running from the bad memories and make some good ones.

Reality set in when she was unable to make as much money as she made in the other states and had to resort to renting rooms to live in.  She had no place to let the grandchildren spend the night, no place to put a tree, no place to make cookies, no place to make memories.  There was little privacy.

Patricia went from place to place trying to buy a house at a lower rate or for a good deal but there were none.    “I worried that I would get older and be homeless,” she said.

She had heard about Habitat for Humanity and decided to call....and got an interview.  “When I was told I would be a partner with Habitat.  I was just numb and didn’t really have a reaction.  Two days later, I was looking in the mirror and started crying and saying, ‘Oh man, I’m going to have a home’. Finally, before it’s too late, before the grandchildren get older… Nanna can make cookies and memories.”

“It’s unbelievable to find people who actually care and want to help,” she continued.  “Everyone was so kind and compassionate. It is almost too good to be true. Thank you Habitat for Humanity, from the bottom of my heart.”
