I wanted to share with everyone a wonderful resource we have in Colorado for educating Realtors about historic preservation and their local historic resources. Many people feel that real estate, by nature, is not compatible with preservation efforts. Realtors and their business organizations are sometimes advocates of growth or change that can destroy historical resources. However, there is much evidence that preservation can be an economically viable compromise for us and our clients.

I have become deeply involved with preservation in downtown Colorado Springs, mainly due to my marketing and sale of adaptive reuse projects that now house residential loft units. I have a preservation specialist on staff who sits on our City's Historic Preservation Board, and makes sure that everyone in our office is aware and educated about local preservation efforts. My office is even located in a National Historic Register listed building!

I am always looking for new ways to share my preservation passion with other Realtors, and this is a great way! Every year, a local non-profit agency known as Colorado Preservation, Inc.has an annual educational session that includes 3 days of fun filled classes about preservation.  Every state has some type of annual preservation convention, luckily for us, Colorado's is the largest! And lucky for us Realtors, they have a number of great sessions that cater to educating Realtors about how we can help preserve our local history.

5 great reasons to attend:

1. It counts for 8 hours of continuing education credit!
2. It's a good excuse to hang out in downtown Denver for a day!
3. It can introduce you to the legal and tax benefits of owning historic property
4. They will be discussing new ideas for marketing historic properties
5. It's good for your community, clients and business!

I hope that other Realtors all across the country will jump on the preservation bandwagon; just wanted to share a great way to get started!
