New  Yorkers Moving To Florida- #1 Reason To Move To Florida

Taxes!

Not only does shoveling snow get on people's nerves during long cold winters in New York but according to statistics gathered by The Tax Foundation people are leaving New York and moving to Florida because of high taxes. New Yorkers Move To Florida

New York has some of the highest taxes in the states.

For many years the number one reason that New Yorkers moved to the Sunshine state of Florida was because of the cold and snow during the winters.

But that is no longer the number one reason.

Now the number one reason they are leaving in droves to move here to Florida is because of Taxes.

Florida has no state income tax, we have low sales tax and food is not taxed. We also have low registration fees for cars and we have homesteads for our primary properties and homes we live in.

More than 600,000 people moved out of New York to Florida between 2000 and 2009.

New York led the nation in out-migration.

The best thing about New Yorkers moving to Florida is that they bring their billions of dollars out of New York and put it in banks here and property here in Florida. They spend their money here in Florida too and this is good for our state economy.

Over 60% of all home purchases in South Florida are ALL CASH purchases and many of those are former residents of New York and the others are foreign buyers.

We welcome you New Yorkers to the beautiful sunshine state of Florida!

Katerina~I thought I recalled that with many people who had "second homes" in Florida who were in NY, NJ, and those other northern states (with awful weather in winter months!), that you paid enormous taxes, and so living in FLA fulltime saved a lot of money. Has that changed?

My mom and one of my mother-in-laws live fulltime in FLA.

Katerina, it sounds like a good business decision.  I know many people from the NE have relocated to Dallas and Houston for economic reasons as well.  We, too, have no state tax.  Buyers are flocking! :)

Gayle- Yes, many northerners have second homes here in Florida. But more are moving here full time because of the lower taxes. Yes, it saves a lot of money.

Sonja- Texas is booming! Nestor lived in Texas for 18 years and was a licensed realtor there. We have 1 son in College Station, a daughter in Austin and a daughter in San Antonio. Nestor lived in Katy and Houston.

Nestor and Katerina

I was lucky enough to have lived in Florida...and then moved to Texas who also does not have state income tax. Now, I'm in California where we're taxed for everything. Oh well, can't win 'em all :)

Katerina, we are getting a few of those looking for no state income tax. I have a home here in Tennessee and one in Florida. I wonder why?

Katerina - as I needed a reason to justify being in Florida (LOL). Good blog post. I still think I like that idea of raising the sles tax and eliminating the property tax. With over 50 Mil visitors, that would fall on them to pay our property taxes. And I would rather pay a little every week, than the full amount once a year.

Hi

I am surprised California didn't lead the list. Almost every week there is news of another company moving out to places like Texas. The sale tax runs 7.5 to 9.5% depending in which county you live and the income tax is around 10%.

cheers cvc
