I discovered several years ago that most of us waste a lot of time during each day when each moment can be a learning moment.

We spend time complaining about what we don't want and griping when we are in traffic, standing in a long line at the post office or waiting for eternity in the doctor's office. Turn these negative moments and hours into fabulous learning opportunities.

 Increase your brain power

Some of the biggest time wasters can become your grandest brain growing experiences. You can actually look forward to being stuck in traffic!

Here are the the time thieves and how you can turn these into brain power moments:

  • Driving especially driving in traffic:

Turn your car into a university of learning. Keep a bag next to your door or in mild climates in your car with CD's of personal growth, increasing your business, learning a language, scriptures on CD, seminars of your liking and great books on CD.  Instead of listening to the radio increase your brain power by listening and learning in your moving University. There are times where I hope I will get in traffic because I want to finish listening to a CD!  Since talking on the phone is also not safe when you are driving this is a good reason to not talk on the phone!

  • Standing in Line:

How often do you sit there in long lines complaining in your mind and even out loud to those around you about how long the line is! The line only seems to get longer because what you focus on expands. It never fails as we send daggers up to the front of the line where the clerks are for behaving so slow, one will walk away in the midst of this huge line and go on break! We are only sending more negative energy to them to continue to behave in this way.

So instead of being negative and focusing on the long line, take out your affirmations that you carry with you and start reading them to yourself. Now this long line becomes an enjoyable experience because you are positively engaged in feeding your brain some great brain food. I also keep small books with me so I can even read standing in line. If I am with Tristan we stand there and do oral math, oral spelling and imagination exercises.

  • Sitting at a Doctor's office:

I only go to the Doctor for my yearly check ups and my dentist is very good about not having people wait but when I was taking Milet, my daughter for all her pregnancy appointments that was eating up a lot of my time because she was a high risk pregnancy and had to go to 2 different doctors at least 3 times a month! So that is when I would fill my briefcase with my planner to catch up on my to do lists, books to read and not those stupid magazines they have in the doctor's office. I choose to read books that I will learn from. I would also take my lap top and write my drafts for my blog.

  • Cooking in the kitchen:

When you are cooking or cleaning in the kitchen don't waste your time with the TV on but rather have a CD player in your kitchen and put in Learning CDs. I know I spend a lot of time in the kitchen cooking and cleaning up after meals that this time is a great opportunity to learn a lot! I have a set up CD's for the car and another set for the kitchen and the house. Now with homeschooling kids this time in the kitchen is mostly to teach them so we play self esteem children' s CDs and of course I teach the kids how to cook and clean. I also do a lot of art projects with them while I am cooking. They can do the art projects right there on the counter.

  • Bathroom Time:

Every minute can turn into a learning opportunity even in the bathroom. Those minutes are minutes you will never get back so keep the newspapers, trade magazines, articles on line you have printed out to read and books of quotations that only take a moment to read.

Dr. John Demartini even reads books as he is walking to and from his office. He is one of the most intelligent men I have ever encountered.

And last but not least live for your dream during prime time instead of watching everyone else live theirs from your couch. The hours of prime time are when more millionaires and happy people are made; they are working on their dreams.

It is never too late to learn something new, to increase your brain power and your intelligence. Watch the Dream Movie here.

Five years from now you will be the same person you are today except for the books you read and the people you meet!

Great post. I would say also with regard to getting stuck in traffic is to do more work at home and also plan your trips as best you can to avoid the rush hours.

Time is such a precious resource.

This is great!  I, too, keep notebooks and my smartphone.  I use every minute that I can.  I despise when people get all grumpy when they have to "wait". Don't get me wrong, I am in a hurry at times to but what can you do?  There is always something even if not real estate related.  Grocery lists, guest lists, work a little on a project outline that you have, etc.  I even have a notebook on my nightstand.....yes, I am one of those that wakes up in the middle of the night with an idea so I write it down right then and there.  My local library has fantastic audio cd's - both professional and non.  I stock up on kid's cd's for when I have my son and motivational or instructional when it is just me.  Keep learning!  Keep your mind active and live for now!!!

Great tips--now, I don't know if I'll use the bathroom tip--I need SOME 'down' time! :-)  One biggie that I learned along time ago--wearing my badge always drums up some sort of conversation and doing it in line (especially at the post office) can generate business!

Katerina,  Great tips!  I always bring something with me into the bathroom.  But this is the issue of people complaining there is not enough time in the day.  That isn't the case, it's their management of such.

Great blog! These are great tips. I must say I was not a regular reader until about 5 months ago besides the Sunday  paper and that was just to look at the sales. But, now I read at least 2 books a month. Recently on my lists are Cash Flow Quadrant, The Magic of Thinking Big, How to Become a Better You Now, The Secret, The Law of Attraction, The Bible (yes the bible), just to name a few. I can spend hours in a book store or all day at the library. I never thought i would enjoy reading so much and it has helped me so much in expanding my ideas. I remembered why i liked to read so much when I was a kid it's actually fun and interesting. Thank you for the great blog.

Amber- That is so awesome! I love to read, always have. I have read most of the books on your list. I do my own private daily scripture study in the Bible. I read the bible every day, every year, over and over again.

I also read The Secret over and over again. It is a great book and so beautiful all the way to the pages in the book. I love bookstores! I can stay in there all day long. The Cash Flow Quadrant is excellent but I think you should read Rich Dad Poor Dad first as Cash flow is like a sequel to Rich dad.

Thank you so much for your comment! I loved it! Katerina

Great ideas!  I try to fill my time with useful and educational things.  I always bring reading material to the doctor's office, but you have added some more great ideas to my list.  Thanks!

There are some good ideas here and I know that multi-tasking and being prepared can save much energy.  But I've had a change of heart.  All that mult-tasking and filling every moment with something became overwhelming.  Now I cherish times that leave me with nothing but my thoughts.  I take the time to breath.  I think the fact that we are constantly available and always prepared to "work" on something has added to the overwhelming stress levels in the world.  Some times being stuck in situation with nothing to do is the blessing.  Good Wishes to All

I was looking for the Internet, or even blogging, on your list.  lol.  A lot of people like to tell us that those are time-thieves (of course, we know better).  Thanks for the good ideas, but don't forget to stop and smell the roses.  And I don't feel guilty watching TV when I'm working in the kitchen!

Carole Kartiganer

Carole- You are doing the right thing with thinking. Thinking and listening to your thoughts is a very important activity to do while waiting in lines, etc. That is if is not negative complaining. I was more addressing filling precious moments with increasing your brain power not multi tasking. Thinking thoughts also increases brain power.

There are many times when you should NOT multi task. I do not ever multi task when I am with a client, when I am on the phone with a customer or a client, when I am prospecting or when I am doing family things.  I turn my phone off, I have set hours I work and I am not saying, "work" on something. I am talking about following your dream, becoming all that you can be, using the time to learn. Learning should not be stressful. If learning is not fun and it becomes stressful than the focus is no longer on the dream.

Thank you so much for your comment. I truly appreciate your comment very much. Katerina

Gary Woltal - REALTOR® Dallas Ft. Worth

Gary- That is one of the reasons we work from home. I even shop from home for most things. I love working from home and I have a post about working from home. I love saving time by not having to put on my makeup and all that! We try to go out of the office (home) only once or twice a week. We make all our appts for that one day, we do all our errands in a circle so we save time and gas. Great ideas Gary! Katerina

My favorite time waster is laughing at those people that only have time to tell me "how much they have to do and not enough time to do it"... It seems the people that say this could save a lot of time just doing the work. :-) I often wonder if I'm guilty of this as well!

Katerina, I agree with Carole K. Wasted time isn't necessarily wasted. Relaxation and thinking are very beneficial. I also like to listen to talk radio while I drive, because it is the only chance I get to keep up with what is going on in the world.

I've heard of people reading in the bathroom. I don't have time...I get in and get out :) I used to worry about my son reading while walking to and from school while reading. I got hit by a drunk driver....I was a pedestrian on the sidewalk....so I think I won't read while walking :)

But you have some other good pointers for utilizing your time that I could use Katerina! :)

Wow, I LOVE this. I'm all about productivity, and now you've given me something else to think about. Especially the kitchen one. Although I don't normally cook, my wife will love those ideas :)

Very useful post!

Katerina- Nice post. It is so easy to be negative (for me that is) and to turn things like you mentioned into stressful situations. My car really is my mobile office but it should become my mobile schoolhouse!
