Back to Nature - Providence Metropark - Grand Rapids, OH

I promised a Part 2, and I'm finally getting around to it.  It's amazing just how busy the new year has proven to be.  I'm encouraged and enthused that the market in our area appears to be looking up.  That's always a good thing!

The second part of our Christmas Adventure took us out to Providence Metropark in Waterville, OH.  Waterville is a quaint little town that has one of the best local artists in the area.  But that's another story!

Providence Metropark is bordered with the Miami Erie Canal and travels all the way down to Grand Rapids, OH.  The entire area is rife with the history of NW Ohio and how we came to be so spread out.

As you can see from the sign, there are multiple ways to enjoy Providence Metropark.  Granted this is much more of a summer venue, but it's even beautiful in the cold of winter.

As you walk along the towpath you can just feel the strain of the mules used to pull the barges along the canal into the locks at the Ludwig Mill.  Just trying to imagine such a laborious task eludes me altogether.  We have become such creatures of comfort it is difficult to understand the stamina that was required of the early settlers.

Once you cross the footbridge into the park area you are greeted by signs of the past.  I don't see too many signs along the roadside that warns me to be alert for mules!  Deer maybe, but mules ... ?

This is the beginning of the Towpath, and as you can see it just winds on down the waterway.  Being an impatient person most of the time I can't fathom having to wait to get where I'm going! It would drive me crazy to just plod along.

As you walk the path you will find remnants of times gone by.  Things like an old wagon, left to return to the dust.  The image prompts mental visions of how austere life was, back in the day ...

And then you get to the stable - the mule stable.  I was happy to see that it was empty, as the thought of those poor mules being left out there in the cold would really bother me.

Unfortunately, the photo of the stable didn't turn out well, so it's missing.  But I think you can get a feel for the terrain nonetheless.

As you near the encroachment of civilization (paved roads and modern traffic) you can view the Ludwig Mill and the Livery through the haze.  We crossed over and walked around the mill.  SO much history.  I never get tired of it.

I hope you enjoy the photos and will consider taking a trip to our area to see it for yourself!  If you enjoy living history, then this is the place for you.  You will never run out of stories or landmarks.

Hi Carol...Beautiful pictures! I love the canal one (your lighting was perfect)

I love the history of the canals ....so many people know nothing about them!

Hi Joan!  Thanks for the compliment!  I love the history that goes with the area.  So many stories that are not told as 'popular' for those seeking local lore.  Most folks don't realize that states like Ohio, Indiana and Iowa had a very strong impact on the forming of the country.  I know I didn't realize it till I moved here!  I was always taught that if it didn't happen in Boston, then it just wasn't history!  LOL

This was a beautiful post.  It was so relaxing to take a "tour" through the eyes of your camera of an era long gone.

Carol, These pictures are just beautiful and I loved seeing them....I also love history and seeing it through your eyes.  You might want to post this in the Group Heritage Homes that Jo has, I'm sure it would be well received there!  Thank you for sharing it.

Lola:  We have some wonderfully relaxing places to explore.  But your area has some nice places, too!  Especially when you get up around the lake and up into Holland.  I can't wait to get up in that area for the Tulip Festival.

Carole:  Any time you want to get away from the hubbub on Long Island, you are welcome to come this way.  I make one heckuva tour guide!  Thanks!

Elizabeth:  You and Diego should plan to come up this summer.  We don't have the mountains that NC has, but we certainly have some wonderfully humbling places to visit.  And there is nothing like a Great Lakes sunrise/sunset.  Love ya too!

Carol, I love it! Thanks for taking me on this tour, your photos came out great! I hope there are more to tours of your area to come?? The flood stat picture made me a little oogy tho!

We have "canals" here too, but nobody made any canal parks yet.

Carol,

These are great pictures you took. And, my first introduction to Ohio. You did a great job with this post!

Cheryl:  Glad you enjoyed the photos.  This area is full of history, but is generally overlooked when folks talk about history and the formation of the Americas.  Thanks for visiting!

Cynthia:  You're welcome to come along anytime!

Lysa:  Thanks!  The flood photos will make one wonder if it's really prudent to live on the river!  We have areas in Toledo proper that the government has come in and bought the houses just to demolish them because of continued and expensive flood insurance payouts.

Georgina:  Never been to Hawaii, so I have to take your word for it!  LOL  Someday I may get there.

Mike:  If this is your first 'trip' to Ohio, then you should take a drive up in the spring!  I'd be happy to provide a tour of one of the best cities in the country.  (I'm a little prejudiced, can you tell?)
