Debbie's Quick Fixes How to fix dents in your front door! Do you have one of those insulated front doors that is made of metal? If you have a home in Clarksville TN, chances are that your metal door has dings and dents that are distracting from the appearance of the door. Even with a freshly painted front door, these dents show up like a sore thumb even more so if the door is painted a darker color. If you are like me, these ugly dents are making you consider investing in a whole new front door.

But worry no more, there is no need to spend several hundred dollars for a new front door when I can show you for about $25, a little time and elbow grease, your front door will look fabulous. With Debbie's Quick Fixes How to fix dents in your front door, you will see how easy it is to make that metal door look like new. Debbie's Quick Fixes How to fix dents in your front door

First, you need to gather your supplies. You can get what you need at a local hardware or home improvement store. The supplies you need are as follows:

  • Bondo kit (This is a brand name for a polyester resin filler that when mixed with an organic peroxide hardener, it catalyzes to turn it into a putty that sets and hardens. This product is used for repairing the bodies of cars, too.
  • A putty knife
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint brush
  • A Quart of Exterior Paint in the color you want for your new looking front door

Take the Bondo and mix with the hardener according to the directions on the can. Then use the putty knife to scoop a small amount of the mixed resin putty and completely cover the dent. Using the putty knife smooth the putty to make it as flush as possible.

Repeat until all dents and dings are filled and level. Let dry completely per the directions on the can. Different temperatures and humidity will increase or decrease the drying time so make sure it is hardened and totally dry. Sand the resin areas until smooth and totally level with the face of the door. Lightly sand the entire door so the paint will apply evenly. Take a slightly damp cloth and wipe down the door to remove all sanding dust.

You are now ready to paint. I suggest using an old sheet or drop cloth under the front door to catch any drips. Open the door to a 45 degree angle and support it so it will not move while you are painting. Apply the paint with long, even strokes in the same direction over the entire door. I personally like the brush marks to go up and down unless I am trying to create a wood-grain appearance. Do not be skimpy with the paint but do not glob it on your brush either. Just use a generous amount on your brush, refill often and stop and check for paint runs. If you have many runs, smooth them out and use less paint on your brush.

Let dry completely. Check the filled areas to make sure that they are undetectable. If you can see any, you need to sand again until smooth or fill again if the dent is still visible and then re-sand when dry. Reapply another coat of paint. In some cases you may need a third coat of paint for complete coverage but this should be rare.

Do not close the door too soon because even though the paint may feel dry to the touch it will need to cure for a few hours so it won't stick to the weatherstripping. This project is best started first thing in the morning so it allows ample time for paint drying and curing.

Congratulations! You have just completed Debbie's Quick Fixes How To Fix Dents In Your Front Door and saved yourself lots of money, too. Plus, you now have a Fabulous Looking Front Door.
