Hamilton Pool Nature Preserve - Dripping Springs TX - Our First Visit

After many tries to get out to Hamilton Pool, we finally made it this weekend! There are several obstacles that will prevent Hamilton Pool from being enjoyed.  They only have parking for 75 vehicles. If parking is full, it's a one car out and one car in wait at the entrance. This wait can be hours long. It's recommended to get there before 10am. We got there about 9:50 and there were only about 5 more cars allowed in.

We have also had a lack of rain for the past few summers, and when the waterfall is at a trickle, it's not much to look at, and we wanted our first experience to be something like an "Ahhh, that's what people talk about."  The waterfall was definitely not as full as many pictures online show, but it was nice. I sat underneath it and let the water hit on my head. The rock is so slippery, it's hard to sit directly under the waterfall.

They also don't allow swimming in the water when the bacteria levels change. There are several birds and other species at Hamilton Pool, and they help to change the balance in bacteria levels. They don't want anyone getting sick, so it's often closed to swimming.

The "beach" area is not really what I imagined. It's a tiny space where people sit very intimitely close in order to make room for others. I should have taken a picture of that, but didn't think about it. I think we'll bring chairs next time as the rocky ground was very uncomfortable.

The water wasn't as cold as I imagined. With the Hamilton pool waterfall being a Natural Spring, I expected the water to be very chilly. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't warm, but it wasn't cold either. Landon definitely preferred the warmer water at the Lakeway Swimming Pool the day before as he didn't care for the colder water.

Here are some pictures of us at the Hamilton Pool.

Overall, we had a very pleasant visit and kinda snickered at the line of 20+ cars waiting to get in as we drove out. We didn't feel bad as we only spent 2 hours there and got there early as recommended. I can see many people making it an all day event, which prevents the line of cars from moving. I wanted to ask how long the wait was, but didn't.

I think I was last at Hamilton's Pool in 1984...it was very laid back then, and only crowded on the hottest days.

Tim, It's crowded almost everyday now!

Lou, It was!

Susan, We'll be back!

Debbie, I'm not sure I would wait hours like others did. I rather just go first thing in the morning.
