Absentee homeowners are easy prey!

Absentee homeowners are easy prey for unscrupulous individuals posing as handymen. In the Commonwealth of Pa. Home Improvement Contractors are required by the Office of the Attorney General to register and show proof of insurance. This includes handymen performing home improvements and making over $5000.00 a year.

I stated that absentee homeowners are easy prey for unscrupulous individuals posing as handymen and here’s the proof. As you can see in these two pictures, these repairs are far from professional work. Yet this absentee homeowner paid for these repairs.

Before you hire someone to perform repairs on your property ask for their HIC number and proof of insurance. If you can’t come up to inspect the work yourself ask a friend to take a look for you, or at least have the individual who performed the work email you photos of the completed job.

This homeowner won’t be getting his money back. It would cost him more in time lost from work to hassle with suing in Magistrate Court and even if he wins nothing says he can collect.

This is so true today and you hear of way too many similar stories. The one that tops my list, when these crooks represent themselves as the owner and either rent the property or even try to sale it and get the deposit check made out to them and then split. cheers cvc

Well, Sue.  That's unscrupulous alright!  And veneering concrete works so well!  Any absentee owner should demand photos before payment anyway...

Jay, the guy didn't even have the decency to pull that piece of venner out of his own truck! That came out of my daughters garbage.

Curtis, I'm familiar with the scan you're referring to. My son and his girl almost fell for it a year ago.

Susan, we have so many absentee owners here too.  Some of the homes are remote enough that it isn't always practical to ask a friend to go take a look at it.  I agree that owners should insist on photos before sending payment.
