Is the Peactree Street Car coming to Midtown and Downtown Atlanta?  Well, it would seem that way. But there are two upcoming public meetings that residents of the "affected areas" those that will be in a special assessment district. This is the proposed way that the majority of the funding for the construction of the streetcar in Midtown and Downtown will be paid for.

What will it look like? Atlanta's system will be modeled after the Portland Oregon street car, pictured here. It would be a system that you just walk on and off (platforms will be built so there is no step up into the car) and will be on rails laid in the street, with just one wire overhead. The cars are proposed to hold a max of 120 people and would run every 5-10 minutes along a route from 16th Street in Midtown to Downtown, with a connection to an East/West route around the downtown area.

The next two public meetings will be:

Wednesday, January 16, 6-8 p.m.
AT&T Midtown 2 Building
725 West Peachtree Street
AT&T: (404) 888-0349

Tuesday, January 22, 6-8 p.m.
First Presbyterian Church
1328 Peachtree Street, N.E.
First Presbyterian: (404) 892-8461

If you live in the Midtown area, basically from I-75 to Juniper Street, and from Brookwood to North Avenue, you could be impacted by the proposed funding structure. Likewise, if you are a business owner, you would be impacted as well.

Take time to attend one of these public meetings and learn more about the Peachtree Street Car!

Thom-The "Peachtree Street Car" looks as though it will provide great convenience, however it will be interesting to see what affects it will have on the area.  We have that going on in our city right now too.  Great post!

Julie:  Indeed this will be interesting to see how the community gets behind this project....or not. At issue is the special assessment district that will mostly effect the condo owners in the Midtown area, as they have drawn the lines to exclude the single family homes....some thought process that they will not walk two blocks to get on a streetcar, so they should not have to pay to build it. Go figure. We shall see!
