Turtle Walks at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, Boca Raton FL

The 2012 Turtle Walk Program has started at the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton!  Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night in June and Turtle-July 3 and July 5, you can make reservations to participate in a turtle walk conducted by the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center.

The program begins at 9PM and ends at 11PM.  Participants will meet at the Gumbo Limbo classroom by 8:45 PM.  Because of the late hours, the Turtle Walk program is only open to children over the age of 8.  Anyone under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.  Tickets are $15 per person.

(There are special rates for Members of Friends of Gumbo Limbo. )

Loggerhead turtles have been on the endangered species list and are protected by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.   Fishing lines tossed off boats, the plastic 6-pak rings for canned drinks, loss of undisturbed beaches, environmental impacts,  exotic predators that have been introduced into the area have taken their toll on the already low reproductive rate of Loggerhead turtles.

In an effort to provide a safer nesting place for these turtles, communities along the coasts have introduced lights- out ordinances that require residents along the beach to turn off their lights during nesting season.

turtle egg hatchlingHatchlings have a kind of instinct that makes them drawn to light after they hatch.  In a natural environment this would be the moonlight on the water across the horizon.

Without the cooperation of  residents and the city, the hatchlings would walk towards street lights or the lights of condos and residences.

**You must sign a waiver releasing the city of Boca Raton from liability.
**There is no guarantee that you will see a nesting turtle.
**You will be walking in sand, so wear appropriate clothing.  Bug spray is suggested.
**NO Flashlights, flash photography, cell phone use are permitted.

Hi Kathy - What a cool way to spend an evening! I'd definitely attend if I were in the area. Mary & I watch a sea turtle laying eggs last year in Mexico - it was on a protected beach and the eggs were gathered and placed in an incubator facility right after to ensure higher rates of survival - the biggest predator of these eggs are poachers.

I've never heard of this....sounds like a great time!  It would be disappointing if you didn't see any turtles though.

Kathy -- interesting event and the concept of a turtle walk is new to me.   I agree with John McCormack and that is a great way to get the kids away from the computer screen and video games.

Kathy~ i have always wanted to attend, but my visits to Florida are only during the winter.. bad timing to see the Turtle Walks.. In one of our new construction homes though a giant turtle is now in the basement and needed to get rescued.. He went through a window.. ouch.. poor thing.. but okay.. I am wondering if there were any babies around..

When we owned our beach place on the east coast, we had the "lights-out" policy going on; it was great walking out there with just the moonlight and seeing the little ones head for the water.

Kathy,

I would love to participate if it was not so geographically undesirable for us here in California.  One of our favorite authors, Pat Conroy wrote about the hatching season in his book Beach Music.  It was my favorite part of the book.  One of these days, I will walk with the turtles---hmm movie title like Dancing with Wolves? Dick- that sounds like so much fun. It's been rainy in the evenings so I hope it doesn't get too rained out.

Sharon- I agree, but you never know.  I think, though, it would be fun just to participate.

BARFF- me too, but you know what they say about the turtle.

Michael- absolutely.  And, these kids will be the caretakers of all of these little guys when they grow up.

BarbaraT- sure..... you know you wouldn't want to see it.  Larry went on a 10 day keys wilderness trip last year and we he stepped out of his tent in the morning he said you could see the Fl. crocodile tracks by the tent!!!

Janis- where'd you put him???

Toni-I love it when you're on the beach and there aren't so many lights!!!

Kathy, What a fun activity to take kids or grandkids on. It would be a little like crabbing but with no prizes to take home.

Alexandra- I love Pat Conroy and it's funny you should mention him because Larry and I were just discussing him this week.  I hope that someday you'll be able to do the turtle walk!!!

Debbie- don't tell me you've gone crabbing??I have fond memories of going crabbing with my grandparents when I was just a little girl.

Kristin- I think everyone got a late start!  It can be frustrating but we get so used to our routines.
