Sunday Selling Tips: Preparing Your House For Sale

Preparing your house for sale can be a daunting job. If you break down the preparation in to smaller "bite sized" tasks and may create less stress and frustration for yourself.

Valerie Zinger, a Real Estate professional in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, suggested starting with your guest bedroom. For some, this room can become a catch all of items that don't have a proper place otherwise. Is Your Closet Ready for Buyers?

What about the closets? Potential buyers will look at every square inch of the house they are considering to purchase.  That includes kitchen cabinets, basement crawl spaces, garages and CLOSETS! What do you do if you are still living in your house while you are selling it?  Here are some suggestions for bedroom closets:

~Pack up out-of-season clothing (if you've priced your house right, you'll be moved before the next season comes along!)
~Do you have anything that could go to charity? Pack it up and drop it off!
~Keep the floors as clear as possible
~Place items on shelves in baskets or containers (all of my shoes are in shoe boxes)

What does your linen closet look like? Do blankets fall on your head when you open the door?

~Organize by type (towels, sheets, blankets, etc.) and color
~Are some items ready for the "rag bag", relocate them!

What about the coat closet?

~Do you have coats, windbreakers, sweaters, etc. that don't fit? Here's another opportunity to give to charity!
~Put your hats, gloves, scarves, and other small items in basket or container

Are Your Kitchen Cabinets Ready for Buyers? Now that your bedrooms and closets are ready for "inspection" by a potential buyer, the next step might be to tackle the kitchen cabinets.  Remember, you are going to be moving and you'll need to pack EVERYTHING eventually, so why not start now?

Donna, Funny you should talk about closets because I had buyers this week that made comments on just about every closet they saw and their contents. It's important to some.

My guest room is not ready for guests if that gives you any hint on readiness; nice post, Donna.

Hi Connie~ We are hoping to have my Mom, Sister and Niece visit with us before my Niece goes back to school.  I'm working on preparing our guest rooms (and the closets).

Hello Debbie~ The amount of space in a closet is important to many buyers.  That's what a good seller needs to show...space!

Hey Teral~ What would happen if I dropped in to town?  Guess I'd have to stay with my Son and his family! :-)  Or maybe I could stay at Southfork with the Ewings!

Donna,

Good suggestions even for those who are not planning to move in near future.  Decluttering actually feels good.  That will be my summer project starting tomorrow.  Thanks.

Nice to see you again.  I have been MIA for quite awhile but I am back.

Hello Mary~ We started the process in our master bedroom closet last summer before I got sick.  There's still a lot of work to be done.  Most of our "unused" stuff will be going in our yard sale next year!
