Surf Air Departing Santa Monica, Permanently
Santa Monica airport has been a hotbed of contension in the past few years as residents in local Santa Monica Condo developments, housing subdivisions and apartments protest the noise and potential dangers associated with operating large aircraft in a residential neighborhood. One potential newcomer, Surf Air, has decided to keep looking as it tries to launch a new concept in commercial aviation.
If you have the money, and use commercial air travel frequently, you could’ve hired Surf Air’s all-you-can-fly service, at around $800 to $1500 a month, as an alternative to waiting in the long lines at LAX. The unique air taxi service was to set it roots at Santa Monica Airport (SMO) and, ironically, operates its headquarters out of the city of Santa Monica. Residents in the relatively lofty demographic could hire a car to pick them up from their Santa Monica condos, or LA Condo, and whisk them to the sea-side airstrip whenver they desired. But after careful consideration, Surf Air CEO Wade Eyerly has made the decision to find an alternate airport.
“We would love to be in Santa Monica, there’s clearly a minefield and we don’t want to step inot it.”
The airplanes Surf Air uses are Pilatus PC12s. These are single-engine turbo prop aircraft and are nicely coached out to seat 8 in executive style. The airline operates a small fleet of 8 of these planes. They are far quieter than the Gulfstream and Challenger jets that operate daily out of SMO. CEO Ayerly points out that the subscription-based airline would have brought a lot of jobs to Santa Monica had they decided to remain local.
