Karen at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge

The 642 acre Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge lies east of Woodbridge VA at the junction of the Potomac and Occoquan Rivers.

When Captain Smith explored the area in the early 17th century there was a thriving Doeg Indian Village.

  • After colonization the site was farmed privately with cows and crops.
  • The US Army acquired it in 1950 for use as a radio transmitting station
  • The base mission was changed to secret research in the 1970's. The base's role as a wildlife habitat continued all during this period
  • The site was acquired by the US Fish & Wildlife Service when the base was closed in the 1990's and opened to the public in June 1998.

Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge

  • About 50% of the refuge is wetland habitats that include wet meadows, fresh water marshes, tidally influenced marshes and streams
  • About 20% is meadows
  • The remaining 30% is either mature or second growth forest
  • There are more than 650 plant species in the refuge
  • More than 250 bird species have been noted
  • 48 mammals are known to exist in the refuge
  • Numerous species of amphibians and reptiles call the refuge home
  • 4 miles of trails are reserved for foot traffic and two miles of roadway are available for vehicle use
Pets, jogging, inline skates, skateboards, picnicking, camping, fires, kite flying and fishing are all prohibited
