Did you know Franklin, NC is the Gem Capitol of the World? Yes it is and Gem Mining is a ton of fun for the whole family to to enjoy.
Mining for Ruby & Sappire began in Macon County, NC in 1870. Brought to the railroad by horse and wagon, Corundum and other minerals such as Mica and Kaolin were shipped out of Frankin, NC in large quantities. American Prosepecting & Mining Co., US Ruby Mining Co. began work here hoping to find the sourse of the Rubies found in the corundum mines. Both compainies gave up the search in the early part of the 20th century. The source has not been found as of yet but rockhounds and gem enthusiasts came here and never left.
There are several place to mine for gems in Franklin, NC. Most Mines sell buckets of dirt and provide you with a screen to wash your rocks in running water at the flume. Don't wear good clothes you will get dirty and most times wet. I believe there is just something special about playing in the mud and it does bring out the kid in you.
