Chipping Away - Wordless Wednesday (almost)

By
Real Estate Agent WV0026375

Last year we had a Pileated Woodpecker excavating a large nest in a tree near our house.  I never could get a photo of the woodpecker.

Well I finally got a photo, actually a couple of photos, of a Pileated Woodpecker a few weeks ago.  I was actually less than 10 feet from him while he was chipping out a large and roughly rectangular hole in a tree while searching out insects.

The Pileated Woodpecker continued to chip, chip away while I continued to click my camera.....guess he was too hungry to care that I was so near!

Is this what is called here a Grandfather Woodpecker?  They are huge and can certainly do some damage to trees.  Great shots... We're both on the same wave length today as I just posted bird photos also :)  Great minds!

That is a great catch, Rebecca.  I have never heard of a pileated woodpecker, and I generally only hear woodpeckers, never see them.

That little critter appears to be on a mission!  I suspect we would be really surprised at how swiftly he actually get's the job done!  The first time I saw that name, "Pileated,"   I thought it read "Pleated."  I kept looking for it's pleats, like in a skirt:-)

Rob, a lot of damage to the tree.

April, yes the woodpecker was just eating away, ignoring me.

Sharon, that he was pretty to look at.

Anita, yes a hunger bird indeed.

Jane, the Pileated Woodpeckers are always in the woods here.

Carol, I guess the woodpecker was jiust too hungry to be concerned about me stading so close by.

Hi Rebecca,

Great pictures and the Pileated Woodpecker is one of my favorites. Yes, I have heard they do a lot of damage so I am glad they are not in my area but I love to see the pictures.

How funny that he was so busy he didn't even care you were so close. More important things for him to do I guess. Hope your tree survives.

Hi Kristin, I should have mentioned that the tree was dead and I am sure had a lot of insects that the woodpecker was looking to eat.
