Not all Realtors are created equal.

I had the pleasure of meeting two different clients looking for new homes this past week.  They both had previously been working with agents and had even made offers that did not work out for various reasons.  When I asked them both if they were working with a Realtor, they both responded that they had been, but they didn't like their agent and are just doing it on their own.

The first client is a single lady, who is so nice.  I had the pleasure of meeting her family as well, who were very nice and easy going.  She was working with an agent who was not as nice.  When they looked at homes whenever they asked any questions the agent rolled her eyes at them, seemed hurried and could not be bothered to stop and explain anything to them.  She did end up making an offer, but was in a multiple offer situation and did not win the battle.  The agent pretty much gave up on her and treated this client like she was nothing but a pain.  Ironically, just the other day sent her an e-mail with a new listing, even though she has not heard from her in weeks.

One month later this same very nice young lady found her way to me through one of my listings.  She was so shocked at what a different experience it was working with a different agent.  I answered all of her questions, took every one of her phone calls and she commented that everytime she called the other agent she felt like she was bothering her.  We did find her a new home and she is very happy.

The second client is a boyfriend and girlfriend who, if you count me, are on their third Realtor.  They too indicated that had some bad past experiences and are going it on their own.  After having a long chat regarding what is acceptable and not acceptable in terms of the behavior of a Realtor and explaining how I work, they have decided to work with my in finding their new home.  They worked with 2 previous agents who also treated them like they were bothering the Realtor.  One agent wanted them to make an offer on every house they saw, even if they didn't like it.  The other agent was pushing them hard to purchase a home they did not want because the home inspection was so bad.  They too felt like they were bothering these agents and being strong armed into buying something so the agent could make a quick commission.

So I guess the lesson in this is that there are plenty of Realtors out there to help you.  As in any industry, there are the good and the bad.  There is a reason Realtors exist and that is to guide buyers through a very complicated and stressful process.  If you are working with someone who you don't like, fire them.  Ask friends, neighbors, co-workers for a referral.  If they had a pleasant experience with their Realtor, odds are you will too.  Believe me if they hated their Realtor they will let you know about it.
