In case you haven't heard of it before, BRAC stands for Base Realignment and Closure.  This has to do with the government closing military bases around the country and consolidating them.

The BRAC is going to be bringing thousands of people into the Ft. Meade and surrounding areas.  This is very good for Maryland homeowners as this should help with supply and demand of homes around here.  BRAC is the biggest single component of regional growth for the foreseeable future according to the Howard County BRAC Task Force.

What most people don't know is that BRAC has already begun!  There were about 250 military jobs that came into the area last month.  We helped several military families move into homes in the area.  These jobs are going to be coming in, little by little, and by 2009 we're going to get a large influx of people coming in.

If you are thinking about buying in Anne Arundel County, I would suggest that this is the time to do it.  No one has a crystal ball so we can't foresee the future, but we do know that there are going to be more than 22,000 jobs coming into the area over the next few years.  With these jobs come families that need housing.  Think about what that is going to do to our housing market.

Right now interest rates are very low and housing prices are lower as well which makes for a great combination.

Davin and Lisa:  This is interesting information because I haven't heard of the first base closing.  Wishing you the best.

There are several around the country that will be closing over the next several years.  I think it has to do with budget cuts - probably will save money to have fewer bases?  Thanks for the comment!

Whew, I don't know about 50%, I'd have to get one of those huge teams organized.  Wouldn't mind a few of them though!

Karen - I think it will be awhile before we really feel an impact, but it's good to see them trickling in.  I think we'll all be pretty busy in a year or so!

For Northern Virginia there are still a number of issues to be resolved before we know the final location for some of the relocatees (is that a word?)  Joint command has already happened for some parts of Henderson Hall and Fort Myer.  More to come.
