You Don't Have to be a Literature Major to Write a Featured Blog Or Even a Good Post

Just in the last two days, you may noticed that some members of Active Rain are trying to get newbies and less active members more active.  Rich Jacobson wrote "BLOG, or Get Off the Pot!" asking members to write to the group.  Stop lurking in the cyber alleys watching others go by.  Hop out into the main stream and build a persona for yourself.

Kristal Kraft wrote today, "The Official Unofficial Guide to Getting Involved on Active Rain..." to help teach how to post an article to the network.  She used screen prints to illustrate each step on how to create and post the blog.  Very informative for those not so technological people that are out there.

I'm in the dark on how to write a good postBut with all this motivation and help to get you more active in the Rain, there is one thing missing.  How to write a post that will get you noticed?  I have seen people write over 100 posts and not once get featured.  I have seen some people get featured with their first or second post.  So what makes them get noticed?  Matt Heaton touched on this breifly the other day with "The rhyme and reason behind featured posts."  The format for getting featured is changing from what it used to be... but old habits are hard to break.  I am not saying that the same people will continue to be featured, but I am saying that Matt and Caleb and those who help determine what gets featured like to feature those posts that they like to read and think others will enjoy reading.

To get featured or to even write a good blog, you do not need to be a Lit. Major.  What you do have to do is write how you like to read?  Let me give you an example... I like informative posts and comical posts.  I like posts that have to do with golf.  So, how do I write?  I write often informative posts and throw in there when I can a little humor and golf.  Does this mean I will get featured?  No, but it keeps my posts uniform.  People will begin to remember me.  Look at the Old Codgers... a group of not so grumpy old men sitting in a coffee shop talking about just about anything that comes across their minds: weather, coffee mugs, getting comments, etc.  (Hey, I am trying to promote you guys... yes, this is a blatant attempt to get a comment from you old codgers.)

When you write, create a persona for yourself... humorous, informative, critical, trouble making, etc.  You need to find a persona within your style of writing that can attract eyeballs.  Some have created a persona for themselves and not even known it.  They may not like that persona, but it is getting them noticed.  Don't get upset if after 10-50 posts you still don't get featured.  Keep trying, but mix it up if you are not seeing comments.  That is the biggest factor to determining if you are writing effective posts.

If you are getting comments, then you are doing something right... (Hint: Return the favor; comment back.  And go to their posts and comment)  Marc Blasi, Chris E Griffith, Jeff Belonger, and several others regularly read my posts.  Why?  Because I read their posts and comment.  Often times, you will find us going off topic in the comments and start joking around.  We are building a relationship that started with an on topic post that turned humorous.  That is where the real networking comes into play.  Just remember comment more than you post!

So you now have no excuse for not posting a blog or two... Rich Jacobson set the challenge.  Kristal Kraft gave the tools.  I have given the insight.  Write away my fellow ARians... talk about what interests you and tie it to real estate, mortgages, staging, etc.  Draw us into your world.  We are waiting... (Oh, more hints:  We frown on "Cut and Paste" posts and short posts that are clearly written for the purpose of gaining a couple more points.  If you are going for points, the real points are in writing good posts that get lots of comments.)  Who knows, your next post could be a hole-in-one.  (I knew you were wondering how I was going to get golf in there) :)

Hey Jason, Very well written and excellent advice. Blogging is all about being yourself and being consistent with what you write. Readers have to know what to expect. Good job.

Hey Jason.. motivational and inspirational, giving a push to those standing around and watching. :)) when were you going to get to the golf part?.. oh! there it is!  I tend to naturally do what you mention regarding  commenting and reading on fellow bloggers who comment and read on yours. insert subliminal message here
btw, what a great looking baby.. so cute.

Good job Jason nice post, being yourself is what it's all about.

Another hole in one would be great. All I need now is an albatross.

Putt to Win... Drive for show...

Thanks Jay

I like the advice. Dont let the writing/ or the ideas stop flowing. With English as my 2nd language, I may not be able to convey my message at its best, but I dont let my "disadvantage" stop me!

Jason:

I read the posts you pointed out and it all makes sense.  Building relationships are what it's all about.  If posting a blog makes me feel good at a particular time, then I will do it.  If not, then I look around to comment on those that have something to offer.  I'm a newby on the block but one thing for sure, AR is addictive and I think a very healthy addiction.

Well written, Jason.  I struggle with changing up my posts at times, but even so I enjoy learning and sharing my experiences with others.

Jason, very well said! It's been really awesome watching all this HUGE wave of collective energy building and filtering throughout the network. We really can make a BIG positive difference to the future of this platform if we all do our part (sounds like a line from a Superman movie!) Thanks for taking the baton and running with it!

Jason - nicely done, and it was great to include the other posts you mentioned, too.  I really like your point about commenting and returning the favor.  I spend ALOT of time reading and commenting on as many posts as I can, when I can.  It would be nice if people who receive comments would not only return the favor, if they see fit, but it would be nice if they'd respond to comments left on their own posts!

Great advice, Jason. I think the idea of blogging in this public a forum IS intimidating for many, especailly those who are really new. I'm sure many will appreciate your ideas and suggestions.

I love to write....I may write so much I run out of things to write though. I have just started getting into the blogging and commenting. It's definitely fun.

01/09/2007 06:58 PM by Christy Powers - Pooler, Savannah Real Estate Agent (Keller Williams Coastal Area Partners)

In my experience, my blogs that tend to get features are stories that I've written on what has happened to me in various aspects of a transaction, be it the actual closing nightmare or how I met my current client.  When written in a story-like tone, I think they also generate more readers because they're easy to relate to.  Personally, I don't like the long technical blogs.  If it's going to be technical, I rather the person brake their blog up into several blogs over the course of a few days in order to digest what was read and to try to implement.  When given too much info, I skip right over it without coming back... but that's just my A.D.D self.

Bryant - I had learned for one of the best... thank you.  You were one of the people that I read a lot of when I first joined.

Caleb - Your welcome... thanks for stopping by.  I am honored when you or Matt make a comment.

Linda - Hello Carnac of Connecticut... this Friday will be the first of our PGA tour golf reviews.  So far your predictions are right on...  Now, if I can just find a joke to throw in there.

Nick M - Thanks... she is turning one on Saturday.  Big day!  By the way, you look better with the shorter hair.  And I am sure you will make someone very happy with your donation. (I will swing over and put this comment over there too)

Jay - Is not a hole-in-one on a Par 4 hole not the same as an Albatross?  Here are a couple trivia questions for you: What is a hole-in-one on a Par 5 hole called?  And what is the longest Par 5 Hole-in-One?  Thanks for stopping by.

Loreena - There are a couple others here on AR that have English as a 2nd language and have made a good presence within the community.  I am glad to hear that you will not let that be an excuse from keeping you posting.

Ken - Welcome to AR.  This site is about networking (ActiveRain: Real Estate Network).  Yes, it is good to share industry new, topics, and bounce ideas off of, but we are also here to build relationships with others to help us all grow to be better professionals within the industry.  Good luck with the posting.

Steven - It is all about doing what you are comfortbale with and being yourself.  I see that you are close to a ratio of 1 out of every 2 posts get featured... looks like you found the formula of expressing yourself quick. :)  If it works, I would not bother "struggling to change" things up.

Hey Jason I hope you get some of the wall flowers to write.  There's people that have been members for a long time and yet not one post.  I just have to wonder if they didn't understand the site or what when they joined.  I even have a partner that joined a month or so ago and hasn't posted.  Guess I will have to get after him.  Great insight on posting.

I Have been enjoying myself very much on AR, I just got my first "Featured" Blog, I like to talk and even more I like to ask questions. This is the place for me....But.......Sorry, I do not like Golf..hehe

Rich - That is why we are all here... to help each other and pick up or take the baton to take things to the next level.  We all have much to learn from each other.  Thanks for starting the string on this topic.

Lenn - You are so right.  If you don't write that first one, you can't expect to aquire the skill.  For some it comes naturally, others it takes practice.  But it starts with that first one to find out.  Thanks for stopping by.

Ann - It is nice when you see others commenting on your post when you comment on theirs.  Is this a subliminal message like what Nick M did?  Don't worry I read your posts (your an associate of mine)... I try to read those everyday, even if I don't get the chance to comment.  :)  As for the return comments within the post, that is a whole other story/post.  I believe Marc did one on this a while back (I will have to look for it).  I do agree with you on it though.

Jeff - I know when I started I was really intimidated.  I was not sure how I would be received by those who were more experienced at writing posts.  Then I found out that everyone is here to help.  All you have to do is ask.

01/09/2007 08:29 PM by Knightlines Mortgage Services, LLC

With Jason's permission I would like to ask Ann something..  Ann, READ what MY do BLOG you AND mean COMMENT by ON that MY exactly BLOG ?

Christy - Writing can be fun... and yes, at times it will be difficult to figure out what to write next.  I know that I sit there some time wondering what I will write next.  For some people, they have a talent for always having something to say (other than comments)...

Chris - Which that leads me to you... always having something to say.  What are we up to 5 posts a day?  I don't know how you do it.  As for your comment, the $20 will be paid upon playing a round of golf with Marc and I.  How's that for extra bribery?

Donna - I agree that story format is a much better way to get a reader's attention and keep it.  Some of the long drawn out info posts can make those of us without ADD develop it quickly.  I still read them because info is good, but I know what you mean.

Cynthia - Even if we can get the wall flowers to turn on "one headlight," that will be so much more information for us all... Good luck setting your crosshairs on your partner.  Just watch out if he gets addicted. :)

Monika - Thanks for stopping by... your husband stopped by talking golf.  Sounds like you might be golfing tomorrow. :)

Monica - I saw you feature.  Congrats...  keep it up.  And yes, you do like to ask a lot of questions, but that is the only way to learn.  If there is anything I can do to help with the learning, let me know.

01/09/2007 09:03 PM by Knightlines Mortgage Services, LLC

Jason, I think you would be correct that a hole in one would be also called an albatross. I usually think of an albatross as a 2 on a par 5. Some also call it a double eagle but I don't think that is actually correct according to the R & A, I could be wrong.

Can't get rid of the above bold for some reason. sorry

Where I play my golf league a guy a few yrs ago holed out the par 4 8th which is up hill and 322 yds and heavily protected by bunkers. It is easy to reach but luck to drain it.

A hole in one on a par 5 would be called a Condor. Several have happened most of them being on severe doglegs.

The longest I believe is 517 yards in high altitude of Denver.

Nick M - Trouble maker. :)

TLW - The queen of comments and hijacking... how have you been?  I have been missing your jokes in the Comedy Club.  I also noticed that your posts have not been as frequent.  Or are you posting directly to some of the groups?

David - She is my daughter, Madison.  She will be turning 1 on Saturday.  TLW used her McDonald subliminal messaging billboard to send her a Happy Birthday message over the weekend.

01/09/2007 09:11 PM by Knightlines Mortgage Services, LLC

Jay - You really know your golf... the longest "straight" hole-in-one took place on a par 4 with a distance of 447yds by Robert Mitera.  And yes, the hole-in-ones on the par 5s have been because of severe doglegs.  And I do believe you are correct on the yardage for the longest hole-in-one par 5.  I have to do research to see who it was.

I prefer the term MISCHEIVOUS, since I'm having fun, and not really starting trouble. Dont bar me, brother.
Ann, read my blog. I was only having fun. read my blog. OK? read my blog.

I just noticed that the comment was by Jason, and not Ann. I read it in my email and got it wrong. My apologies Ann. There you are quiet as a mouse and I'm here joking around. Jason.. you're right.. trouble maker! :^O

Ann - I think there is a message for you Nick's comment... I think it is something along the lines of reading his post.  I am not sure though.  You may want to check it out. :)

Phyllis - thanks for stopping by.  Glad to hear that you have made new friends here in the Rain... that first post can be a little scary, but once you get it out of the way, it becomes much easier.

Jay - interesting article... it is a little contradictory to this one about longest hole-in-one... link. They do credit Mike with the ace, but not as the official record holder.  I wonder what the reasoning is.  Guess I have to do a google search myself.

I always have things to write about. Unfortunately they aren't all real estate related. I love writing songs and poetry. So when I am not blogging, posting, or writing, I am trying to get some real estate done. Some much to do, so little time to do it.

That was great information Jason.  I was one of those sitting on the sideline but I didn't sit for too long.  Writing was never my strong point so I just decided to do whatever the hell I wanted to do.  If something comes to my mind I will write about it and hopefully provide some information to someone on some planet in some universe.  With my high school education (public school system) I will do my best to work on good blogs!

Put-Put..now there is a topic!

Agreed you do not have to be a Lit Major to write-however write about something you know. If you have a twisted sense of humor...write about that!  But more importantly folks...COMMENT so that we bloggers know you have read our posts!  I have noticed a decline in comments-which is a our measure of feedback. PS It is OK to be the first response.

I like the therapy part best.

I made a hole in one at a mini-golf place once. thats been more of my style, but I could get used to those carts on a real golf course.

BTW, I was amazed at Jay's knowledge of the hole in ones, then he shared the link.. ooohhh, slick Jay, very slick. :))

Christy - Do you post any of your songs and poetry to the network?   I believe there is a group for poetry posts.  If there isn't one, you should create it.  I bet others would add to it.

Deborah - I am sure that you will find the happy blend.  You can practice your swing... I prefer not to.  That is what makes golf so much fun for me (not knowing where the ball is going to).  Sometimes it is right on target; other times a severe hack.  (Funny kind of like my posts) :)

Kaye - I would love to hit a hole-in-one on something other than a putt-putt course.  The closes that I have come is about 3 feet from the hole.

John - ActiveRain: Just Write It

01/10/2007 08:28 AM by Knightlines Mortgage Services, LLC

David & Tonya - Never be afraid of speaking your mind.  I personally could not stand literature class.  But here I am writing posts.  Go figure...

Natalie - Welcome to AR... I look forward to seeing some of your posts.

Mike - I expect a full report on that course... :) if you want to play it for free, check out my post "2 Average Joes + A Golf Course + Localism.com = Free Publicity & Free Golf."

Chris - Leave it to you to break things up...  swarm of bees.  How about we dip the ball in honey before each tee shot?  That way the bees can follow us all around the course.  Person with the lowest score and most stings wins.  And I bet after a few rounds (of drinking), we could get you onto at least a putt-putt course.

Not only will writing "from the heart" appeal to those that share your views - once they discover your blog it should keep them coming back!

Allison - Why do I think you were referring to yourself with the twisted sense of humor? :)  Comments are alway good.  You just inspired me to write a comment today for those posts that do not have a comment.  Just to let them know that someone read it.

Monica - Ok... I will let you know if they become annoying.  But I doubt that would happen becuase questioning is the only way to learn.  And I know that we would rather have someone in the industry question to learn, then someone struggling through it making a bad name.

Ann - Be afraid... be very, very afraid.  Have fun reading his posts. :)

John - At least you write... writing your mind for therapy is always a good reason to keep writing.  Keep it up.

01/10/2007 08:48 AM by Knightlines Mortgage Services, LLC

Nick - If you are going to have fun driving the cart on the course, just make that if you have Marc Blasi with you he is buckled in.  He has a tendency to fall out of the cart. :)

Tony - I totally agree with your comment.  People read posts from those that share the same opinions and views.

01/10/2007 08:52 AM by Knightlines Mortgage Services, LLC

Jason I followed the link and I see they say 477 yards is the longest go figure. Looking at the 9th hole in Denver it doesn't look that bad of a dogleg. Oh well... I love golf and will continue to play as much as I can when I can.

Thanks Jay

Chris - What you do with cows on your own time is your own business...  You would make a good looking Charlton Heston, though.  Not sure if I would trust you with a gun, yet. :)  Actually, I was commenting back to Chris Tesch... if you have not seen the Cows With Guns flash yet, you really should check it out.  Pretty funny.

01/10/2007 01:08 PM by Chris Elizabeth Griffith ~ Bonita Springs Fl Real Estate (Keller Williams Elite Realty, Bonita Springs, FL)

I never said that you couldn't handle a gun... I just don't know if I would trust being around you with a gun.  Like you said, you grew up on a farm :)  I wouldn't want to be fishing with you (was going to say golfing, but I know that would never happen) and get an injury.  You might have flashbacks and say, "Poor Jason... he has turned up lame.  I guess we will have to put him down."  Bang.

I am just kidding... I bet you could probably field strip (I have seen the picture of you topless in the pasture... I am talking about another kind of field stripping) a gun in a matter of seconds.  I will leave the running circles around Ben-Hur comment alone...

I figured you more of a Laura Croft gun-toting type, not the Al Pacino gangster type.  Farm girl gets mixed up with Italians.  Well, I guess that would make more since now... Marc, maybe?

Nilton - Welcome to the bloggers anonymous.  We all admit that we have a problem... that problem is that no one has developed a 12 step program on how to stop. :)

I thought Marc was Italian.  Seriously, he wrote me an email in Germain today!

First off.... Jason is it?  lol  Good post.  In all honesty, I gave up on the rainers that needed a shot in the arm or a kick in the butt. If anyone remembered, I ran around AR about a month ago with my head cut off, pushing AR.... trying to get people to read and write... trying to get the AR gods to make it easier for newbies....  the intro e-mail sent to newbies.... maybe a newbie page... etc etc. I actually had many people from AR and even some in here that seem to be pushing it now, shoot me down, told me to relax... and not to worry. Kind of funny on how the tide as turned per se.,

In regards to Ann Cummings comment, her first one. Jason, maybe you should ask if you could include her comment in your post. This a great idea that Kristal Kraft and a few others that have mentioned this in the past...."going back to your post and acknowledging the comments in your post".....  not always easy when you get many, but it sure can keep others coming back....get a mini conversation going, and overall, I just think it's polite.

Chris Griffith had me laughing with the $20 cooment. Thanks for the laugh. As Bill Murray said in Stripes.... "hey kid, I need to party with you"....well, something like that. I am sure Jason, the movie buff, will correct me.  ;o)

Nick M..... awesome baby.... talk about subliminal messages.... lol

1st SGT Kucic..... as Jason and Bryant mentioned... just be yourself. Ask my teachers and professors....all from 3rd grade through 8 grade, high school, and most of college.... I HATED writing.....  look at me now. I do it because I enjoy it... I learn a lot from it..I learn a lot from other's posts... and also from many comments within my posts..,..  their input, suggestions, and even blog wars.  You'll do fine.  GL   And a Specialist here.... '86 to '88    24th Infantry Division    12B

getting back to Chris Griffith.... evil childhood?   behives?>  lol   Remind me if I get this gold tournament up in running in Florida, that I wear a bee net...   ;o)

Last... Mr. Price...... thanks for the mention.

Monica - Ok... I will let you know if they become annoying.  But I doubt that would happen becuase questioning is the only way to learn.  And I know that we would rather have someone in the industry question to learn, then someone struggling through it making a bad name.

Very good point....off to think of some more questions...LOL
