Naples City Council OKs zoning change for garage, condo complex

Naples City Council on Wednesday approved a request to change the zoning and small-scale density for one downtown residential community, giving developers the opportunity to move forward with a four-story, 42-foot-high parking garage and condominium complex.
Council voted 5-2 to change the zoning designation for a 43,000-square-foot parcel of land at Fourth Avenue South and Fourth Street South. The rezone changes the property from a mutli-family, residential zoning district to a planned development.
The move also increases the density in the neighborhood, by allowing developers to build a 22-unit condominium complex.

Clinton, McCain win NH primaries, trailed by Obama, Romney

McCain's triumph scrambled the Republican race as well.
"We showed this country what a real comeback looks like," the Arizona senator told The Associated Press in an interview as he savored his triumph. "We're going to move on to Michigan and South Carolina and win the nomination."

Clinton's victory capped a comeback from last week's third-place finish in the Iowa caucuses. It also raised the possibility of a long battle for the party nomination between the most viable black candidate in history and the former first lady, who is seeking to become the first woman to occupy the Oval Office.
"I am still fired up and ready to go," a defeated Obama told cheering supporters, repeating the line that forms a part of virtually every campaign appearance.

On Thursday, Port Charlotte's Fawcett Memorial Hospital will officially unveil a posh new ward for spine and joint patients, alluring to both the patients with those problems and the surgeons who solve them.

Six days later, and six miles across the Peace River in Punta Gorda, Charlotte Regional Medical Center will do the same.
The partnerships are crucial to ventures like the orthopedics and spine units because they tend to draw the surgeons' business.

Slow growth advocates collected the required 12,525 petition signatures to get the special measure put on the ballot, and county commissioners agreed Tuesday to set the special election, which will cost about $400,000, as quickly as possible.

The slow-growth measure will not be the only issue on the ballot because county commissioners decided Tuesday to add three other questions. One will ask about increasing county bonding authority for roads. The other two will address citizen initiatives, including whether a ballot question can be delayed until the next regularly-scheduled, countywide election as a way to avoid the expense of a special election.

The added election means county residents will head to the polls four times this year. A special statewide referendum on property taxes is set for Jan. 29, a primary election for Aug. 26 and the general election for Nov. 4. Voters in Longboat Key will trek to the polls five times, because the town's general election is March 18.

Bill Earl, a founder of Citizens for Sensible Growth, which mounted the petition drive, says voters still have an appetite to curb growth despite the downturn in the local economy.

"Because the growth machine is going to come back stronger than ever, and we need to get structural changes in place now," he said.

t would be a stretch to call the county's plans to defer small scheduled impact-fee increases this year a boon to area builders.

Even so, most county commissioners on Tuesday said the decision to hold off on the 2.5 percent uptick probably could not hurt.

"This small amount, for this time period we're talking about, makes economic sense to me," Commissioner Ron Getman said.

The new fee level would have added about $200 to the cost to build a three-bedroom home. The county and the school district assign $15,576 in total impact fees to such a structure. The money goes toward new or expanded public facilities.
