Social Media TrendsWith the introduction of Facebook stock to the public as a company, closer scrutiny has been given to all these social media trends. I think on pretty much ALL of them, the jury is still out. The latest thought beyond the business model with profitability from ads and 4 out of 5 people ignoring the Facebook ads is the question,

Is Facebook For Old People?

There is a trend for the 13-15 year olds coming up in the ranks to bypass Facebook for Twitter altogether in rebellion to Mom and Dad and liking to get followers more than friends although a NORMAL person typically on can only get 120 followers, much tougher to do, than with the average friends at 140.

NO limit to followers, 5000 limit with friends....

Twitter is faster and lends itself better to the mobile app photo storing, editing, and sharing services like Instagram. It is viewed as more hip!!

Facebook being for the "older" audience is the group over 35 years old LOL if you think that is old. But a large share of the Facebook growth is in the 50-64 year old range mainly women. I think it is a big outlet for the grandparents and grandkid photo sharing and keeping up with what's going on in life. Facebook has its strong detractors who either have deleted accounts or will never get on. If you have narcissists that are now getting the attention they never got as a child they are now THRIVING posting something on Facebook (or Twitter) several times a day, the other end of the spectrum is the EXTREMELY PRIVATE people who think most social media is massively silly and a huge waste of one's life. Both consumer and business focus can be attributed to CONNECTIONS on social media, but on some days you do wonder whether it is worth it or not? With 900 million users, 80% overseas, Facebook won't decline rapidly like MySpace anytime real soon, but it is good to watch it and see what happens.

Maybe the right approach is to be a little on at least these two and see what it does for you unless you are the extremely private one. No right answer but you can almost tell WHOM a person is depending on which platform they are on, what they do on it, are they the narcissist or the private one, and their age range.

No right or wrong, just life in the social media realm in this day and time. STAY TUNED!!!

Gary,

I have found that the very young are using all of the new things.  However, those of us, myself include, who are older find ways to utilize Facebook and other social medical to amplify our brand and our face to face networking.  I laugh when people say hire a 13 year old to set up your social media.  No thanks.

Very interesting topic Gary. I feel like the younger generation decides the next social media outlet and then everybody accommodates accordingly. With more people spending less time on Facebook and looking at the trends of technology Facebook will probably be obsolete within a decade. Great post

Is Facebook For Old People?   Better not say or else I will get myself in trouble with somebody.

The other end of the spectrum is the EXTREMELY PRIVATE people. Just want to say that if you happen to be an extremely private person that doesn't happen to want to or see a need to share EVERY little thing with the world doesn't necessarily have SO CALLED SECRETS or is a SECRETIVE.  IMHO there is a HUGE difference between secretive and a private person and in this day and age of TELL ALL on Social Media being private is a lot of times seen as BAD or doing something WRONG if you don't want to share EVERYTHING which IMHO a personal choice and shouldn't reflect on that person negatively.

I use Facebook mainly because it is a good way to know what your kids and grand-kids are up to at least what they would post and I enjoy it in that respect.  I am not too sure for business, although people say it is the "cats meow", I am not so sure, plus I probably have just not figured out certain things.  Different strokes for different folks is what I grew up with.

Whatever the social media convention is today, it will change shortly.

Isn't it funny how things work.  I remember when our oldest daughter started college and talked about this great social media "thing" only for college students (facebook). She really liked it.  Then when it went to the whole world she was not happy about it at first then of course, it grew on her even more.  My children introduced me to it and I LOVE IT.  I get all my news, updates from family and friends, and spread by Business there, etc. It's a one size fits all for me.

Can't really stand all those @this and @that at twitter.

Google plus sure is moving up though.

Not everything should be Google however.

Curious to see what the next "hot" item will be.

This title make me laugh, I will probably get "card" for this age group. HAHAH. Regardless, Social Media is great to connect with some friends especially in this busy business.
