139 Comments on Do you really know what's best to do with SPAM comments on Active Rain
Having been flooded the last few days, I was tempted to delete. However, I know that each report is worth 10 points and is well worth the few second to click the report concern link.
Anna:
I am late to the party. I think I commented on activerain tudes that I always report spams to AR. I hope they create a real zapper that will give the spammers a real shock. Too mean.
Get #124 everybody! Zap that Spammer!
Definitely flagging those spam posts is the way to go. That way they can be blocked hopefully .
Lol - I just zapped a spam right here right now! I love doing that!
Anna: You are such a hoot!! I zapped that spammer right on out of here! Now, we need a way to report the ones in the consumer question forum.
Pretty ironic that this post has been SPAMMED! Okay so I reported it. Don't delete it Anna.
Rob -AR staff is working on it and they need our help.
DO NOT... I REPEAT....DO NOT DELETE SPAM ON YOUR POSTS. REPORT SPAM SO AR STAFF CAN ZAP IT.
Thanks Anna, I enjoy doing a little bit of spam hunting every night. Once I found out about the positive side of spam a few months ago, I make a daily activity of going on the daily search for 10+ spams.
The funny thing is that the first spam of the day today in on a blog about zapping spam.
It is a shame that they have invaded Active Rain. And I find that I find more SPAM in a day on Active Rain than the 10 per day reporting limit.
Hi Anna, thanks for sharing. I had been a "deleter". Will now refer them to the AR staff.
Wow! Apparently you struck a nerve Anna! I've seen it and used to delete them as well till I read Kerri's blog. Glad you posted this!
PUT THE BLAME WHERE IT BELONGS, ON ACTIVE RAIN, A PROGRAM CHANGE THAT WILL ALLOW THE ORIGINAL POSTER TO DELETE IT AND SEND IT TO OBLIVION IS A GOOD START.
I agree with Susan in #21: If you just delete the spam, in signals them to send MORE. Always hit the "report a concern" link. It right now is INVISIBLE, but if you scroll your mouse just to the left of the time and comment # in the lower right corner of the spam comment, it is THERE. Click on the "report a concern." Then, as Anna said, do NOT delete it. AR will take care of it. It takes about 24 hours.
Great call to action Anna. Looks like you have amassed an army or Spam Zappers now, including myself.
@Michael #107 - LOL!
Anna, I think that it is funny that the first spam that I find tonight as I start my nightly spam hunt just popped up on this blog, so thank you to george wallace from nutty rich for posting a spam comment for me to start my spam hunt with tonight.
Great Post Anna, I have found that you don't always get your 10 points for reporting. When I joined AR about 6 months ago, I read the instructions on everything and have been reporting spam ever since but do not always get the points.
In the beginning the 10 points per report would be awarded on the day of the report. Then it became the next day and now it sometimes takes 2 or 3 days to get the points. Apparently it's not something automatically done by the system. The AR staff must have to look at the report and make sure it is spam before awarding points.
Here's an example of what happens. Say you reported 6 spams per day for 3 days. On the morning of the 4th day an AR staff member awarded your points which should be 180 but the system puts a 100 point limit on the day they are awarded not on the day reported.
There has also been 2 times that I did not receive any points for a couple of days reporting. There must be so many reports they can't work them all. It's still fun to report (target practice) even without the points.
Wayne, I wondered about the inconsistent scoring of these for a while too.
My theory it that if you want them to count toward your points you need to report them between midnight and 8am california time, on a weekday, any other time they are generally ignored.
I was pleasantly surprised the other day, after reporting 7 spammers. I didn't know we got 'bonus' points for it, so now I'm always on the lookout.
Thanks for sharing!
Michael
